    1. In the two years following the increased enforcement that began in 1974, 21 hotels and over 1500 rooms had been closed within the Downtown Eastside

This is where growth is important. The lives of many depend on these hotels, as they offer shelter. It is the work of not only the landlords, but also to city to provide a solution to such problem.

    2. Harvey Molotch (1976) argues that it is increasingly a conglomerate of interlocking pro-growth associations and governmental units – what he calls a “growth-machine” – which is guiding the development of cities today

The downtown east side does not require a "growth-machine", but perhaps a cohesion of growth and care. It is the value of the land that is being considered but not the value of the lives of the people that live among the downtown east side.

    1. Unfortunately, though, it touched on everything but raising the generation of tomorrow’s women leaders. Instead we discussed the tyranny of pink, unintentional racism and, especially, the profound inappropriateness of complimenting one another’s clothing in the workplace.

For young girls to feel empowered to become a leader, the support surrounding these young girls need to encourage and empower them. I believe this should start in early school, as this confidence then has time to grow over the course of her education. Yes, it is important to discuss why certain actions or words are inappropriate but let's also lay the foundation for girls to become leaders rather than listeners of gendered issues.

    1. young people don’t vote because they don’t see the federal government as a force for change

I believe this to also be true. However, for myself issues such as environmental consideration is important and I can recognize when administrations are not acting in favour of this issue. Therefore, as I recognize the inaction and opposition, I am eager to put my voice to a vote.

    1. and breaches both communications policy and the civil service ethics policy.

The "Harper Government" is the name of the brand. It is useful for citizens to refer to the administration as such because it creates a correlation between Harper's values and positions, rather than simply the broad term of the "Government of Canada."

    1. Under Rove’s guidance, the Bush team surveyed large samples of individual voters to assess their beliefs and behaviors, looking at such things as church attendance, magazine subscriptions, and organization memberships, and then used the results to identify 30 different kinds of supporters, each with specific interests, lifestyles, ideologies, and affinities

In today's current technological landscape, this kind of targeting is to be expected. However, this is a somewhat terrifying practice for a potential government administration to carry out, rather than simply a marketing agency. At the end of the day the currency is not of monetary value, but rather a vote. A vote which has had extensive strategies and tactics employed in order to curate the vote into what the Bush administration wanted it to be.

    1. The fact that our politicians seem so utterly beholden to the dairy lobby, so completely unwilling make the decision that is so obviously in the national interest, and so ill-equipped to fight a special-interest group for the benefit of Middle Class Families—that is probably the most damning observation anyone can make.

The food libel laws of the U.S. are important to keep in mind during these conversations because allows those critical of the dairy industry to question why there are laws in place to make it easier for food producers to sue their critics. Here, it is evident that not only do these cultural norms surrounding dairy effect consumers, but politicians are also complicit in the critical analysis, or lack of, against these industries.

    2. They don’t care at all about the griping of a few thousand utterly self-interested and comparatively well-off dairy and poultry farmers.

It is broad and inaccurate to say Canadians don't care about where their dairy and poultry comes from. Rather, Canadians should be encouraged to question those behind the industry and the power these industries hold. I disagree with the writer, I think there are many Canadians, certainly in Vancouver who are conscious and interested in the source of their food.

    3. dairy-egg-chicken-and-turkey cartel

Interesting, funny and telling use of the word 'cartel'. If the writers position wasn't clear before, this phrase certainly clarified their stance on these industries.

    1. allowed people to hear only the news, facts, and opinions they want to hear.

This reminds me of a statement from Alboim's text, which I found powerful to the current context of social media and democracy: "If you don’t know what you don’t know and are unwilling to delegate others to tell you, you begin to narrow your universe to one driven by your preconceived interests (51)."

    2. This in turn has expanded the reach of radical and fringe ideas and conspiracy theories.

This is an interesting statement, as I have never thought of the self-created 'echo chamber' of social media as a means to develop extreme thoughts and ideas or radical opinions.
