    1. ZAPU is convinced that socialism is the better system of life and must therefore prevail and be the order of life in Zimbabwe. ZAPU conceives of socialism as the control by the people through their State of the basic means of production - the land and its natural resources, industry, transport, communications, financial institutions (banks), external and internal trade and social services.

This is what ZAPU wants. They want to get rid of capitalism, British imperialism and colonialism. They believe socialism is better way life. There would not be as much exploitation. They people who live in Zimbabwe would be able to control the State not outside forces. So many aspects of their lives had changed for the worse since British imperialist forces and applied a capitalist system that socialism seemed to be the best option. Socialism provided a sense of equality for the people in Zimbabwe.

    2. To consolidate the unity of the oppressed masses of Zimbabwe as a basic condition for the success of the liberation struggle, national reconstruction, and social transformation. To attain this objective, ZAPU will mobilise the masses to condemn and reject tribalism, regionalism and racism as reactionary and contrary to peaceful national development and progress;

ZAPU wanted to create a socialist state and eradicate the capitalist system and any form of colonialism. They believed they to be as unified as possible and things like tribalism, regionalism, and racism were derived from colonialism and the capitalist system once in place. Colonialism created a divide between people and capitalism created a divide among people too, a monetary one. These delayed their national reconstruction and social transformation.

    3. Education (i) Education is the most fundamental factor in developing human resources, as such, its provision and planning deserve priority

ZAPU making education a priority and obligation is important. The education equality aligns with their goal to be socialistic. It shows what was taken away during colonialism and a capitalistic system. It was not just the peasantry who was suffering, all classes were and the poor education was blamed on capitalism. Capitalism took away this equal chance of education.

    1. I solemnly promise to you that after victory, I will endeavour to repair everything with you. We will build more beautiful roads, bridges and sluices and better houses worthy of a free and independent nation.

Ho Chi Minh uses we and our a lot through this document which also creates a sense of togetherness. By creating this sense of togethernesses helps him appeal to people across Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh takes away the worry actions the Resistance War by promising the rebuilding of cities done by everyone again creating a sense of togetherness.

    2. On the battlefront the fighters are sacrificing their lives for the Fatherland without regret; why do we regret a section of road, a sluice or a house which the French can use to attack our Fatherland?

Ho Chi Minh is letting people know they too can make sacrifices like the soldiers. Such as destroying a road to prevent the French from progressing. This creates a sense of unity around beating the French and creating a better life after.

    1. The whole Vietnamese people, animated by a common purpose, are determined to fight to the bitter end against any attempt by the French colonialists to reconquer their country.

I found this sentence to be interesting and important. Looking back at the decolonization of India, there seemed to be many groups trying to reach decolonization and independence with their own goals. This sentence presents Vietnam as one unit trying to achieve decolonization and independence.

    2. On March 9, the French troops were disarmed by the Japanese. The French colonialists either fled or surrendered showing that not only were they incapable of “protecting” us, but that, in the span of five years, they had twice sold our country to the Japanese.

This shows how the Vietnamese were declaring their independence from France, yet they were fighting for their independence against the Japanese at the same time. Due to Japan and France both trying to use land in Vietnam. A few paragraph below it mentions how the Vietnamese really "wrested" their independence from the Japanese.

    3. The Declaration of the French Revolution made in 1791 on the Rights of Man and the Citizen also states: “All men are born free and with equal rights, and must always remain free and have equal rights.

Similar to the Haitian Declaration of Independence the Vietnamese use the words of the French Revolution against the French. This is to put the people in Vietnam on the same level of equality as the French. This shows they are just as capable and deserving of these rights too, like the French were during the French Revolution.

    1. We do not agree with the communist teachings, we do not agree with the anti-communist teachings, because they are both based on wrong principles

Nehru separates India from either side: communist or anti-communists. This separation shows India is capable of their own teachings especially since they find both to be wrong due their principles. Separating themselves also shows how India wants to be free and will not succumb to either side in fear of being under someone else's rule.

    2. then they are going away from the right track and the result of that will be that the overwhelming might of one country will conquer the world. Thus far the world has succeeded in preventing that; I cannot speak for the future. . . .

Here Nehru brings up having too much power can be a bad thing for the Great Powers. He continues to say how the world has prevented this from happening, indicating this should not be happening. There should not be a dominating force and India will not bow down even if there is one.

    1. Their writings hypnotize us. And so, one by one, we are drawn into the vortex.

Gandhi explains how the disease of civilization spreads/passes down. It is through the words of those who are "intoxicated by modern civilization." They make modern civilization seem so great "a dream" that is not often one is shown the ugly/disappointing part of modern civilization.

    1. Formerly, the national question

Stalin asks one to look at the national question from a different/new perspective. By shifting that perspective and having more of a proletarian focus he is able to appeal to the working class. He is able to reach more people this way since majority of people in colonies are not the bourgeois.

    2. Cases occur when the national movements in certain oppressed countries came into conflict with the interests of the development of the proletarian movement. In such cases support is, of course, entirely out of the question.…

This indicates Stalin's goal was to push communism. It can be seen in which movements he says to support. He has no interest in supporting movements that "conflict with the development of a proletarian movement. Stalin only had interest in movements overthrowing imperialism, which would help push the notion of imperialism.

    3. civilised" and "uncivilised" slaves of imperialism, and thus linked the national question with the question of the colonies [and] into a world problem of emancipating the oppressed peoples in the dependent countries and colonies from the yoke of imperialism.

Here Stalin argues that imperialism creates a divide between people that leads to the oppression of one group (peripheries). It is interesting how he presents this in efforts to get across his argument of supporting certain movements.

    1. To what extent the Jew appropriates the civilization built up by others

Hitler said "the Jew appropriates the civilization built up by others." He talks about anyone practicing Judaism as if they less than human. He even goes as far as referring to them as "a parasite." By doing this he takes away the human aspect and is able to push his message even more. In an earlier paragraph, Hitler mentioned how propaganda works best alongside different parts of people lives and him bringing up art executes that. He makes all and any connections to why Judaism is a fruitless belief system.

    2. If Nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with stronger, she wishes even less that a superior race should intermingle with an inferior one, because in such a case all her efforts, throughout hundreds of thousands of years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may be rendered futile.

This sentence supports Hitler previous statement of not using too much science in propaganda when trying to appeal to people. Here he uses a nature analogy to push the idea that there is a superior race and an inferior one. Hitler also uses anecdotal evidence in following paragraph; comparing and contrasting Germany to other cultures that were the champions of a higher culture. He created and pushed the idea that some people were superior than others in Germany.

    3. If this principle be forgotten, and if an attempt be made to be abstract and general, the propaganda will turn out ineffective, for the public will not be able to digest or retain what is offered to them in this way. Therefore, the greater the scope of the message that has to be presented, the more necessary is it for propaganda to choose that plan of action which is psychologically the most efficient….

Hitler explains how certain elements like slogans are key to propaganda working effectively. If a group is pushing an idea generally without a target group the propaganda will be ineffective. He explains how important is for people to retain information and slogans are way to help individuals retain and "digest" his message. This shows how he could appeal to groups of interest to him.

    1. their existence as independent nations can be provisionally recognized subject to the rendering of administrative advice and assistance by a Mandatory

The communities that use to belong to Turkish Empires were considered developed enough to administer their own rules and way of life. Unlike communities in South-West Africa, Centra Africa, and some of the South Pacific Islands. I would like to know what determined when one community was for lack of better words independent or developed enough. Also would people be less forthcoming to let "less developed' communities become independent due the benefits that could come from their lack of own administration.

    2. as integral portions of its territory, subject to the safeguards above mentioned in the interests of the indigenous population.

The safeguards were in the best interest of the indigenous population(s). Of course, if some populations are not strong enough to help themselves, offering and implementing ways to improve are great. But if the administration is to be carried out for a long time by an outside group, I think it can prevent from a population or a people from becoming independent.

    1. they have a duty

This paragraph reminds me of the white man's burden we discussed in another reading last week. I think it is interesting that Ferry does not explain why "superior races" have this right. I think if he would have explained this it would of derailed his goals of expanding more or his message would come across as urgently.

    2. Germany

Ferry brings up Germany and it setting up trade barriers to express the urgency of developing more. It creates a sense of competition and the need to improve. He calls for improvement in exports and new resources. I think this ties into the arms race we discussed earlier this week.

    3. they did not fulfill their duty as men of a higher race

I think it is interesting that Ferry references the Spanish soldiers colonization efforts. I think he does this encourage France to continue their colonization, insinuating that they can do a better job other empires. Also, Ferry mentions Spain introducing slavery into their colonies. France abolished slavery before Ferry was prime minister, but he uses terms like "superior and inferior races" which I think are derived from slavery in some ways. So I am curious to know his stance on slavery.
