Responsibility, Metacognition:
There are many people in our classes, it is up to us to adapt content into our form of learning or to ask for help if needed. Using the correct learning style is important to achieve to the best of your ability.
Openness, Flexibility:
Important qualities for learning, students much learn to adapt to new things and to be willing to learn.
“parallel text sets”
A very important concept, you may miss something vital when reading a passage that you pick up when watching a video (it could be an underlying thought, almost like hearing the answer to a question you never knew you had).
If you still have difficulty figuring out this difficult section of the text
If you are still struggling, engage with your professor, they are there to help you and this could evolve into an interesting topic of conversation or even a debate depending on the text itself.
I have always used personalized symbols in the margins of texts, like a star for ideas I like, a “Q” for Quotes I may use in my essays or papers, a “!” for an alarming or surprising idea. I often use ? for difficult or confusing concepts that I want to return to later
This method will be different for every one - experimenting may need to be done to find what works best for you.
not all reading is the same
Students must learn to adapt to different texts and adjust their method of annotating accordingly, each of us will figure out the best methods for us as time goes on.
who you are as a reader matters
Who you are as a reader was made by everything you have experienced, it contributes to your perspective, how you think and the way you process information that you read.
reading, and specifically reading in the discipline in which you wish to write
The more you expose yourself to a topic or a skill, the better you will become at it, practice (whether that's doing your own writing or reading someone else's) is always important.
ask questions
You can do this through annotations, thoughts and questions to come back to in order to understand the text more and to learn from it.
writers typically make within those genres
No two writers write exactly the same but often multiple writing pieces within one genre hold similarities with one another in things like tone and progression.
help you determine where to focus your energy while reading
Especially helpful when under time constraints.
adaptable based on how you develop
What works for one person won't necessarily work for another and what worked for you once might not work always - adapt when needed.
Metacognition and Self Reflection
Reflect on both the good and the bad to see what worked and what behaviors you need to change going forward for a better outcome.
We’ve got our ideas; what are your learning goals as a student??? What are some strategies you will use to accomplish them?
I would like to not only complete my degree but also excel in my classes, I want to be able to use what I have learnt outside of the classroom, not only in a future career but also in general life after college.
Plus, tutoring is free. Or, to be more accurate, you already paid for it in your tuition and fees
Taking advantage of campus resources like this can bring students success to new heights, using tutoring to better understand content even if you technically "do not need it" will put students further ahead.
Be present
Don't just listen, engage, ask questions and participate.
academic identity
Who you are is important, not only academically but as a person.
narratives
Everyone has a different narrative, this is why no writer has the exact same voice.
take risks, experiment, and truly grow
Learning to take risks in reading and writing is intimidating but being able to step out of your comfort zone and experiment is a vital part of growing as a reader/writer.
“Reading and writing is not for them,” or “Literature is not my thing.”
Everyone has the ability to grow and become better in a subject, no one "can't" ever be good at English or Maths (or any subject).
Panic Zone
This is a dangerous zone to be in if a student does not immediately seek help as when learning becomes overwhelming it can prevent you from learning not only the present information but the next module as well, it can cause a student to fall severely behind which can cause a lot of problems.
learning must be challenging
Being challenged forces learners to go beyond what they know, to learn more and to force themselves to work harder/more in depth than they usually would.
honors the learning styles and strengths of everyone
This provides the highest chance of success across the class as each persons needs are being catered for and they will be feeling heard, which always helps when learning.
“multiple intelligences”
No one is intelligent in only one way/field, we all excel at a different array of things but that does not make any one person better than another. This is important to take into account when learning as one test does not determine the state of your intelligence.
growth mindset
People should always aim to grow their minds (and as people) - develop their knowledge, this mindset is important for going beyond succeeding.
a curriculum that revolves around their lives
The majority of people are more likely to engage when they relate to a topic, they are also more inclined to have genuine interest in something that resembles their life rater than something that has nothing to do with them.
Why does your experience and opinion matter?
Every one of us has a story and a unique life, this often shapes not only our behaviors but our writing and methods of learning. Both experience and opinion will always matter for people to understand you and anything you create.
questioning
Asking questions is one of the most important things in not only learning but life, people should always challenge information and ask questions to understand it more and to grow your own knowledge base and your mindset.
constructivist learning
This way of learning forces engagement with the content which helps give students a deeper understanding rather than wrote learning (which is much less effective).
transfer to many courses, and beyond to many life situations in your career and elsewhere
Our courses are meant to help set you up for life both in and out of college, it is important to learn our syllabus not only to get good marks but because the information may be useful to us in the future.
metaphor and real experience
While we can often relate to the real experience of a journey, being introduced to metaphors surrounding it can not only help shape your perspective of the event but can also help us to understand it on a deeper level.

always involves degrees of ʻcode-meshingʼ
Code-meshing is important in writing as it not only makes it more interesting for the reader but also makes it more authentic to the writer's identity
“Studentsʼ Right to their OwnLanguage”
It is about having and making choices as a writer
“code meshing”
a very important skill - to "mesh" two "codes" such as balancing and combining the use of both formal language and your own unique/personal language
