    1. In the conflict thus far, success has been on our side

What is the success? Is the confederate winning the war, or have people united and buy into the message of the confederate.

    2. our social fabric is firmly planted; and I cannot permit myself to doubt the ultimate success of a full recognition of this principle throughout the civilized and enlightened world.

I find it so baffling how convincing the confederate leaders were that their values were commonly shared among all of the south. While some may have believed this to my understanding many "confederate" valued people were more interested in not loosing their business or jobs as farmers and losing the farming empires that was the southern United States.

    3. The architect, in the construction of buildings, lays the foundation with the proper material-the granite-then comes the brick or the marble. The substratum of our society is made of the material fitted by nature for it, and by experience we know that it is the best, not only for the superior but for the inferior race, that it should be so. It is, indeed, in conformity with the Creator.

Compares society to a building, saying some people are like the granite foundation while others are the “higher” materials like brick or marble. The point being made is that different races supposedly have different “natural” places in society, with some meant to be at the bottom. By bringing in “the Creator,” the writer argues this hierarchy is part of God’s plan. Basically, it’s a way of justifying racism and inequality by making it sound natural, logical, and even moral.

You know how it was with poor Matilda and Catherine. I would rather stay here and starve—and die, if it come to that—than have my girls brought to shame by the violence and wickedness of their young masters. You will also please state if there has been any schools opened for the colored children in your neighborhood. The great desire of my life now is to give my children an education, and have them form virtuous habits.

The only wish to educate his children leaves a sense of hopelessness for himself and simply living a life of a parent, to do what is best and necessary for his children's success.
