he shrank from the bosom of Faith,
disconnected from Faith
Brown turn pale, dreading lest the roof should thunder down upon the grey blasphemer and his hearers
Brown turns pale when the minister is preaching
as if to avoid
Brown now doesn't trust people
"look up to heaven and resist the Wicked One!"
Tells Faith to resist the devil
Evil is the nature of mankind.
Everyone has evil in them
Ye deemed them holier than yourselves, and shrank from your own sin, contrasting it with their lives of righteousness,
These people Brown looked up to are not that good
cried a voice, that echoed through the field and rolled into the forest.
There is a voice echoing
There is no good on earth;
learns his family wasn't good, the lady who taught him religion isn't good
Faith! Faith!" a
Yelling Faith- he wants to go home
"That old woman taught me my catechism!"
Goody Cloyse taught Brown catechism
Goody Cloyse
important to Brown's upbringing
As he spoke he pointed his staff at a female figure on the path
Staff has a snake on it. With the staff the man points to a female. This female is Goody Cloyse.
But, were I to go on with thee, how should I meet the eye of that good old man, our minister, at Salem village? Oh, his voice would make me tremble, both Sabbath day and lecture day!
Man from the woods says he knows many people high up who Brown looks up to
I have been as well acquainted with your family as with ever a one among the Puritans; and that 's no trifle to say. I helped your grandfather, the constable, when he lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem. And it was I that brought your father a pitch-pine knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an Indian village, in king Philip's War. They were my good friends, both; and many a pleasant walk have we had along this path, and returned merrily after midnight. I would fain bę friends with you for their sake.”
Man says Brown's father wasn't as good as he thinks. He helped his father harass a Quacker women and helped his grandfather burn down a village.
"Too far, too far!"
Man tells Brown to walk further into the woods but Brown says that is too deep into the woods IMPORTANT: Brown talks about his father and his father and said they were "race of honest men and good Christians" and since they never went deep into the woods he shouldn't either Man tells brown his father and grandfather arent as good as he thinks they are
"Faith kept me back awhile,"
Man says that Brown is late and Brown explains that he is late because of his wife Faith
beheld the figure of a man,
A man appears in the woods from behind a tree
What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an errand!
Feels bad for leaving her he is conflicted
YOUNG Goodman Brown came forth at sunset, into the street of Salem village,
He lives in Salem with his wife faith. At a sunset Brown wants to go into the forest. Wife Faith asks him not to but eventually accepts.
"There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree,"
