While President Donald Trump has been tackling LGBTQ+ activism at the federal level, Iowa has become the first state to pass a bill that removes gender identity from the state’s civil rights law.

While President Donald Trump has been tackling LGBTQ+ activism at the federal level, Iowa has become the first state to pass a bill that removes gender identity from the state’s civil rights law.
highlights the broader context, like NY times.
Ultimately, the legislation acknowledges that “gender identity is a feeling,” and that “the Civil Rights Code is normally about immutable characteristics based on truth.”
Starkly different stance the majority of media outlets who aim for neutrality and aim to not offend.
“If anyone is being erased, it’s me: a woman, a mother,” Kueter said. “A man, no matter how much makeup he wears, or how many hormones he takes or how he will mutilate his body, will ever be a woman. Nor will he ever understand what it means to be a woman or a mother.”
yet another perspective being given a voice.
“Please don’t take my rights away simply because you disagree about who I am. Being trans is not a choice. It is a reality that you come to when you come to love yourself and understand yourself.”
adds depth, and layer of emotion/humanity to the whole issue.
Before debate on the bill, the House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on the proposal Thursday morning. Forty-two people spoke for and against removing protections based on gender identity.
New content that I have not come across in other articles. Seems like a first thought to me to include quotes from those directly affected.
Unlike the previous administration’s policies,
Taking this opportunity to draw distinction between the Trump and Biden administration. Both of whom have vastly different stances on the issue.
Like Iowa, several Republican-led states are moving to enact laws that create legal definitions for biological sex following the executive order.
Highlights the future implications of the passing of legislation. Uncritically, highlighting how other states may follow suit. Implying that they maybe should follow suit.
The signing of the Iowa legislation comes as President Trump’s administration moves to limit official recognition of transgender identity nationally.
Mentions the role of the trump administration and how this event fits into the broader narrative.
Ms. Reynolds and the Republican-led Legislature have used their power to write conservative priorities into Iowa law, restricting abortion, banning school library books deemed sexually explicit and allowing for state-level immigration enforcement.
This is extra info about the landscape of Iowa, that I did not see in any previous articles. Hot topics too. Book Banning, Abortion, and Immigration
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill Friday that strikes gender identity from the state's civil rights law
A very large picture of Kim Reynolds here. As if they are trying to vilify her.
23 states explicitly prohibiting such discrimination in employment
different stat than the nyt article. That one says 20 states. This one is hyperlinked, while the nyt article is not.
Wichtendahl added, through tears, that transitioning saved her life.
Although it is an emotional line. NBC keeps there commentary limited to state legislators.
The Iowa Civil Rights Act broadly prohibits discrimination in many areas of life, including employment, housing, education and credit.
Explains the legislative background and context for the audience. Citing the Iowa Civil Rights Act- credible.
Reynolds, a Republican, said in a statement Friday
cited Gov. Reynolds and the statement she mad on Friday.
On the other side of the issue, Kathryn Kueter of Pleasant Hill told a Senate subcommittee that "if anyone is being erased from society, it is me, a woman.”
I think this is also a necessary quote. Republicans use protecting women as a defense for the bill, so it is 100% fitting that this be included.
Two protesters were handcuffed and arrested by state troopers.
This is a fact that is not in every article. Almost every article mentions the protests that took place, but this is definitely a provocative fact.
"Iowa, a beautiful State that I have won BIG every time, has a Bill to remove Radical Gender Ideology from their Laws," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Iowa should follow the lead of my Executive Order, saying there are only two genders, and pass this Bill – AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Thank you Iowa!"
Trump and his ideas are throughout this article, even immediately in the subheading.
Democratic Iowa state Rep. Aime Wichtendahl
A frequent name in many of the articles I have read. I mean, why not? A transgender Iowan who is also a state representative sounds like a great source for this.
Immigration
Wondering why this is in the immigration category?
They say Iowa was one of the first states to put protections for transgender people into its civil rights law.
Jarring fact they added. It could even be a headline. Despite being the first state to enact protections for the trans community, they are also the first to revoke it.
UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTORS: (Chanting) No hate in our state. No hate in our state.
The podcast transcript starts with a protest, so the reader could infer that this piece of media is also in protest of the decision. To take a direct soundbite rather than tell the audience about the protest is a specific choice that was made to evoke and emotional response.
Iowa strips protections for transgender people from its civil rights act
The word "strips" in this sentence is figurative language. Regular language would be something along the lines of "removed." This evokes vivid imagery of something being taken. Foreshadow the tone of the article.
When Gov. Chet Culver signed the law adding gender identity and sexual orientation to the Iowa Civil Rights Act in 2007, he did so at Principal Financial Group's offices in downtown Des Moines.
The fact that a civil rights law was signed at a Financial group's downtown office highlights the partnership between corporate power and government.
Businesses helped defeat Iowa's past efforts to end trans rights. This time, they're quiet.
Differently, this article is focus on the role of businesses in this issue.
But those tariffs are expected to send prices skyrocketing in the interim,
The narrative that I assume most people voted on was that Trump would do good things for the economy and bring prices down for the consumers. This is not currently looking like the case. Trump never sticks to one narrative, he shifts and doubles down on what he said, ultimatley to benefit himself.
Global markets tumbled, economists warned of a possible recession and consumers braced for price increases on cars, food, clothing and more.
I think there is a level of unusualness or oddity in this piece. This line highlights how virtually no one, other than the executive branch, is in favor of these exorbitantly high tariffs. This article acts an explainer for all the people out there not understanding what and why Trump is doing what he is.
To Trump, U.S. Economy Is a ‘Sick Patient’ and Tariffs Are the Cure
This is a clearly explained metaphor used to describe President Trump's line of thinking. It poses the US economy as an illness and tariffs as being the remedy.
Mr Trump
Why "Mr. Trump" and not "President Trump?"
A webpage on the Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, appears to have been marked for deletion because it was mistaken for a reference to LGBTQ+ issues.
This is absolutely absurd to me and highlights the shortcoming of the administrations push for efficiency. I'm sure there was some algorithm programmed to delete all articles containing select words, but to erase the history of a historic aircraft is inexcusable. I know that it has since then been reuploaded, but that's barely a relief.
What does the public need to know?
I find myself asking a version of this question often. More specifically, who is making the decisions. In our digital mediated world there is tons of information that gets put out daily, but I still can't help but wonder what gets left out.
In his first term, Mr Trump’s aides shamelessly promoted “alternative facts” while decrying actual facts as “fake news”.
My first thought, and motivation for clicking, after reading the headline was: what are alternative facts? Something is either a fact or it is not. "Alternative" seems like some grey area I am unaware of.
"We are devastated for the families of the victims, and we hold them in our hearts as they try to process the unimaginable."Our thoughts also go to the loved ones of Canadian citizens whom China is holding on death row or whose whereabouts in the Chinese prison system are unknown."
This sounds like familiar jargon. Probably because there is not much one can say in response to death, but also because it is designed, by PR, to be as polished as possible.
China's foreign ministry said on Thursday that it had acted "in accordance with the law",
Unsurprisingly, China's correspondence discuss the law from a seemingly emotionless standpoint, in contrast to quotes from Canadian ambassadors.
Four Canadians were executed in China on drug-related charges earlier this year, Canadian authorities have confirmed.
This line, and topic of the story, indicate that there will be official statements from both China and Canada.
