    1. Why Bullies Are On Top Bullies can teach you something

      .h3

Chapter summary:: [[bullying]] is an effort to cover up inner shame by presenting a powerful exterior and by defeating anyone who questions or exposes your status or competence or self-image in any way. The vulnerability of a bully is mostly shame, which they try try to hide with their hubris or attacks. They actually have a high self-esteem, as ion they value themselves highly and consider themselves competent, and they feel the need to maintain this high view of themselves and are desperate to keep their weaknesses hidden from themselves and others.

    1. For Huh, when he is working, there’s something almost subconscious going on. In fact, he usually can’t trace how or when his ideas come to him. He doesn’t have sudden flashes of insight. Instead, “at some point, you just realize, oh, I know this,” he said. Maybe last week, he didn’t understand something, but now, without any additional input, the pieces have clicked into place without his realizing it. He likens it to the way your mind can surprise you and create unexpected connections when you’re dreaming. “It’s just amazing what human minds are capable of,” he said. “And it’s nice to admit that we don’t know what’s going on.”

This sounds very similar to something I've noticed within myself. I can struggle with something, then when I come back to it a day or two later, I just know.

    2. After Huh graduated and started a master’s program at Seoul National University — where he also met Nayoung Kim, now his wife — he spent a lot of time with Hironaka. During breaks, he followed the professor back to Japan, staying with him in Tokyo and Kyoto, carrying his bags, sharing meals, and of course continuing to discuss math

To soak up someone's wisdom, one must immerse themselves in that person, and so should become valuable to them.

    3. Huh discovered that this kind of mathematics could give him what poetry could not: the ability to search for beauty outside himself, to try to grasp something external, objective and true, in a way that opened him up more than writing ever had. “You don’t think about your small self,” he said. “There’s no place for ego.”

      .ego

When you fall in love with the external world, you naturally let go of parts of the ego. It's much less interesting when you can see the beauty outside of yourself. I think this also turns into a self love and love for others.

Perhaps this is a cycle, between loving yourself and loving the external. Perhaps one can get stuck on loving the self too much though, and that can lead to self absorption. Rediscovering the love for the beauty of the world should be constantly renewed - and perhaps some balance is necessary in order to move yourself into new domains of life and for [[self discovery]].

    1. Somewhat surprisingly, early sales conversations resemble pitching; you’re attempting to quickly intrigue someone with the seed of your idea just enough to earn the privilege of a longer conversation.

    1. Mr Apodaca's original video, posted on TikTok, was watched by more than 80 million people, triggering a trend of replicas, a chart spot for Dreams and a personal message of thanks from Mick Fleetwood. It was taken whilst Idaho-based Apodaca was commuting to work from his trailer, where he lives, to start his shift at a potato factory after his car broke down. "He's not skateboarding, he's levitating," wrote one TikTok fan. "Why is this such a vibe," asked another, in reference to his care-free  mood. In a bid to cash in on his fame, Mr Apodaca attempted to launch a merchandising and clothing range.   The video also led cranberry juice maker Ocean Spray to buy Apodaca a truck, whilst fans raised more than $10,000 for him on a GoFundMe page. Due to copyright, the video being auctioned on Friday will also blur out the Ocean Spray label.

    1. It's enticing and exciting when that thing clicks in your head and you realise you found a way to solve the problem. Perhaps with a trivial problem that's cool and there's really nothing more to do. However, if the problem is non-trivial or important, it's worth considering that there may be other solutions you simply haven't thought of yet. To avoid getting carried away in the excitement of going from no solution to a solution, and simply going with the first thing that comes into your head, try to think of at least 1 more. Trying to find a second solution often forces you to think differently, and once you have two you'll be forced to consider the trade-offs in order to select one. Such contrasting trade-offs can often help frame the problem more clearly as well.

This is perhaps useful at times, although sometimes you really just want to get the code out quicker. So I think it depends. If the project is long-term, this is a good idea.
