Aural focuses on sound. I did not know silence was in this category. I find that interesting. I can explain how in the video there was silence as one example of aural.
-
The most important thing I got from this is linguistic mainly focuses on word choice. I can remember that by thinking of the word language. I got an idea how I can incorporate this into the response.
-
Multimodal is described here well. Can I elaborate more? Will this go into depth. I feel that with more examples, my point can be thoroughly explained.
-
Gestural mode is exactly what it sounds like. When giving a speech this is an important feature. I could give an example of how when I was giving a speech, my facial expressions and hand gestures and body language came into play.
-
Website page could be an example of how visual elements enhance the website as a whole and catches the attention of others.
-
Visual is pretty much what the name says. It is what you see. I love the quote a picture is worth 1000 words because including pictures into work helps 10 times better than just trying to describe it.
-
The different modes are listed. How can I incorporate the modes into my response and explain further? Aural is the one I always seem to struggle with remembering.
-
There are many ways that modes work. I can explain and include examples in my response.

The video is funny with the words at the bottom. The video depicted uses the modes of communication. Visual of course is one, gestural is one and sound is one of course.

there is a simple shape as well. In the center of the bottom half of the quilt, there is a blood red broken heart shape, but it seems as if it is put back together. Inside the broken heart, there are rectangular figures making buildings or skyscrapers. These buildings vary between tall and short buildings. To fix or put the broken heart back together, there is a navy blue balloon with short silver lines inside the circle of the balloon.
Maybe look into what this image means to the panel?
-
the bridge is constructed with a gray thread, but the horizontal strips on it are made in a silver thread. Also, the black and gray building is built with a solid black filling and is dotted with white dots all inside the black portion of the structure. Lastly, the grass isn’t a dull dark green color; the grass is stitched with a dark green, leaf-like thread.
Again, great description! Really paints a picture.
-
The symbol of the American Heart Association is enlarged in the center of the quilt.
I had no idea what this shape was. Great that you told what exactly it was. Maybe add more information on it? Why this symbol on this panel? How does it relate to the panel you chose.
-
The title, which is consisted of words, is written in a dark, solid black color, to help bring the words out. Due to the background of the quilt being in a creme white, the black words in the title pop out more. On the top half of the quilt, the words “A City Of,” are written, while “Hope & Love E. ST. Louis” is written on the bottom half of the quilt. Secondly, the colors are simple, yet effective. On the top half of the quilt, the colors that are used, vary. Besides the color black, that was used in the title; there are colors such as blood red, sky blue, dark green, brown, yellow, black, and gray. There is a combination of vibrant and neutral colors emphasizing a more positive and natural approach to the quilt.
Great job describing and painting a picture of the panel you chose!, maybe include an explanation why those particular features were chosen for this panel?

What is the NAMES Project? The NAMES Project works to enlighten and remember those who have lost loved ones due to AIDS. The mission is to not only think of AIDS as a bad thing but to remember the lives it took as it grows into a big global issue. The quilts that are made preserved, and showed off allow those to join together in harmony and become stronger as AIDS continues to take many lives. The quilts are also used to be analyzed and to be able to conduct research. The quilt I chose to work with is given the block number 5246. The number is hidden on the back of the top left corner of the quilt. Typically, names are given when describing a piece of artwork, but in the case of the NAMES Project, all of the quilts are distinguished by numbers. Each number is unique and only correlates to one block and one panel. These quilts can be laid out vertically or horizontally. In this case, the layout of the quilt 5246 is vertical, allowing a more natural look at the artwork that is displayed on it.
Great job introducing the NAMES project and then flowing smoothly into your panel choice!

Prownian analysis?
"finding value in particular historical interpretations proposed by teapot ... students will find value in learning from the models..." this makes me think. Is this Prownian analysis. is this what makes writing better
objects are like a physical piece of history, so this is kind of where the material culture term relates. We have to try to understand this
we have to seek their cultural significance. In The secret to good writing, it was also brought up how objects mean so much more and have so much significance. I believe that is a way these are connected.
It was stated also in The secret to good writing that all abstract ideas come from objects. that is another connection to understand.
it is important to observe the object, pay careful attention to its aspects, be attentive for detail but keep an eye on the "big picture" .. this is a great point and will help with future writing. Observe closely and think deeply
engage with the object on an intense and intellectually level? its more than describing an object
prownian analysis .. a way of reading history?
"We see articulation and deduce patterns of use; we see interaction and deduce relationship; we see expression and deduce reception" this is a bit confusing to understand. in other words does it mean to break down and evaluate.
"Material culture begins with a world of objects but takes place in a world of words." this quote is relatable to the main idea of the secret of good writing I believe objects are the foundation for all abstract ideas
The Prownian analysis process great if needed to look deeper into an object.
Haltman makes me think of what was stated by Tyre in her article the secret to good writing she stated that "Student papers are often unreadable not only because their grammar is bad and their sentences incomplete, but also because they are way, way too abstract."
The two articles relate yet they are different. I feel the composition is different yet the concepts are similar.
Both articles relate to ways to improve writing and open the mind to new ideas about how to approach writing about a particular thing or object.

The Secret to Good Writing: It's About Objects Not Ideas
- "As a college writing instructor, I have seen many students show up in a freshman comp class believing they can't write, and their opinion is valid" .. this quote is relatable. I came into college believing that i could not write.
2.it is important to know how to use certain words such as "although" and "despite" and also important to ask questions when something is not understandable.
3."conscious skill instruction" "giving specific concrete examples in an essay".. I feel that would have helped me a lot when starting off college. I learn better and quicker if i have an example or something I can go off of.
4."write physically" I need elaboration on this?
5."All abstract ideas derive from objects" i agree.
- "Student papers are often unreadable not only because their grammar is bad and their sentences incomplete, but also because they are way, way too abstract." .. this is such a true statement. A lot of times I have been told that my writing has been too abstract.
