    1. I believe that to fully experience Democratic Writing is to participate in it for one's self. For me, the book, Our Declaration guided me in my journey of understanding of democratic writing and uncovering those ideas in the Rockfish Gap Report. However, that was as far as it could take me. Although I understood the concept, I was not full assimilated into it. This project was definitely worthwhile, but a good way to improve it is by working in groups during discussion using this same idea. That way as we are working we are able to discuss and ask questions to make sure we are on the right path.

    2. To these should be added the arts, which embellish life, dancing music & drawing; the last more especially, as an important part of military education. These innocent arts furnish amusement & happiness to those who, having time on their hands, might less inoffensively employ it; needing, at the same time, no regular incorporation with the institution, they may be left to accessory teachers, who will be paid by the individuals employing them; the university only providing proper apartments for their exercise.

In these lines we see a disregard for the learning of music and arts in comparison to other subjects. In the view of Jefferson, a career in these subjects would not be successful. These subjects were meant to be for entertainment, not for an actual job. It is very interesting because today UVA promotes being a liberal arts school, encouraging students to try new things and take classes that they love. There is a large emphasis on promoting the arts and creativity in schools.

    3. Medicine, when fully taught, is usually subdivided into several professorships, but this cannot well be without the accessory of an hospital, where the student can have the benefit of attending clinical lectures & of assisting at operations of surgery.

Through these lines we see the foreshadowing of UVA’s expansion in the field of medicine. However, during this time the expansion was being delayed because they did not have the resources and advance training to do so due to not having a hospital, a critical factor in training students for the health field. The authors of this document emphasized the importance of hands-on experience in the field of medicine. They wanted to give students the necessary opportunities for success. Today, UVA still strives to produce well-rounded students who are preparing to work in the field of health in their School of Medicine. The UVA’s School of Medicine has come a long way. It is the number one medical school in Virginia and number one in the nation for being diverse. The medicine program started teaching only a few sets of classes. Now its range of possibilities are endless.

    1. Also the whole of his Slaves amounting to 57 in number.

What stood out to me here was not the fact that they had slaves but the location of this sentence. The slaves are listed along with the other properties, also showing the reality that the people of this time period saw that slaves will always be property and can never be considered as humans. Also, the word, slaves, is capitalized showing how it belongs to him and only him.

    2. In the education of youth, provision is to be made for 1. tuition. 2 diet. 3. lodging. 4. government: and 5. honorary excitements.

UVA today is made up of these five things that provisions were made for to continue our education. Tuition is a huge factor of the process, especially depending on if you are in-state or out-of-sate. We are provided with many dining options including meal swipes and plus dollars, and are given dorms to live in. Our government is controlled by the Judicial System and Honor Code. The “honorary excitements” created were used to promote student involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities to help balance with their work. Therefore creating a well balanced student.
