    1. The following templates can help you make what we call the “standard view” move

this can be extremely helpful, especially with the fact that not many writers know how to begin their sentences and continue to keep the sentences on the topic. Th way you introduce your view is the way readers will grasp information and not only see what they understand from your writing but to see if they can see your views in the writing.

    2. be sure that it in some way illustrates the view you’re addressing or leads you to that view directly

I like how they bring this up, although our K-12 teachers did teach us to stay on topic, but the way the author describes 'staying on topic' because they state to view how you are addressing everything and basically if it sounds complete. I notice that many writers have that problem most of the time, especially when they have writers block.

    3. Most people assume that we cannot do anything about the bad state of the English language. But I say we can.

This is interesting, I can see where they can be coming from because english is a very difficult language to master, especially in writing because of how we have been taught how to write.

    4. : remember that you are entering a conversation and therefore need to start with “what others are saying,” as the title of this chapter recommends, and then introduce your own ideas as a response.

I feel like this is something that is emphasized a lot in writing, many people forget that it's not always about themselves in the writing, but discussing about how and what the author feels and is saying versus you just speaking about how you feel about the situation. Knowing when to put your own input about how you feel about the authors is something that should be worked on in writing.

    1. Older spouses may be more mature, but later marriage has its own challenges.

If you think about it, do older spouses last longer? I have heard and read so many articles about spouses divorcing because they've learned what they wanted in their life because of how open minded we are now. Some older couples even come out as gay/lesbian! I feel like marriages have their hits or misses.

    2. “Love”

Many people have opinions on love, some people don't enjoy it or believe in while others will worship it. To me, love is a commitment. Love isn't something you walk away from, and love isn't just for a person. Love can be for your favorite food, your car, to even your favorite sweater. You can love anything, it has no boundaries to what you can or can not love and enjoy to make your life happy. For other people, love is a commitment, and it's sad to see how others don't seem to commit to that at the end of the day. To me, love isn't good nor bad, it's an everyday feeling we can't ignore and it comes with its pros and cons on different days.

    3. writer’s block

Fun fact: a lot of writers don't believe in 'writer's block', they just say they don't have any ideas for their writing. Technically it is writer's block to us, but I guess not to them.

    1. often the best place is the college library’s bibliographic databases

I know a few people who have mention to me about their school having their own search engine, such as, St. Edwards has one called 'Sorin' and it contains scholarly journals.

    2. My professor said something about using peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals.

I have just recently heard of scholarly journals, and how more reliable they are to your research. Because these journals have also peed peer reviewed by other journalist, your sources are so much more reliable for your writing and it is also easier to write a citation for because of the fact that you know your author because it is a journal.

    3. but these metaphors can shed some light on writing with sources.

I like how the professor mentions using your own experiences with your resources and just things around you. And the way to present your things as well is key to how you're presenting those resources and experiences you've had.

    4. When my professors talk about sources, they usually mean books or articles about my topic. Is that what you mean?

Again, finding resources is difficult most of the time. Looking for more information through books and articles in kind of tough too, especially because some of the things we read are biased to whatever we are trying to write about.

    5. I have to cite and document my sources.

I can connect with Marvin, having to write essays in college and needing a little bit of help with it. I have troubles writing essays myself and even finding reliable sources for my papers. I never even learned how to use scholarly resources before others introduced it to me.

    1. “I really got kicked by the notion that getting clear on your path was overrated. I wish I’d been more… I don’t know… intentional.”

This quote stands out to me because as I said before, we can relate to it being young adults. We wish we could do many things with purposes behind it, our purposes, but we tend to just try to make others happy.

    2. “The unlived life is not worth examining.”

I actually disagree with this, how would you know if something was worth it if you didn't go ahead and do it? I have never second guessed myself, did I regret some of the things? Of course, but did I also live the life I decided to examen? OF COURSE. The unlived life IS worth examining because you have to live to learn.

    3. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in adult development, I have seen countless twentysomethings spend too many years living without perspective

If you think about this sentence, that is actually a bunch of us. We are a bunch of "young adults" who spend so much time living in a different perspective. We tend to view things differently but also just because we're still developing and we want to have our own freedom and taste of what our life is like, which is something that Kate can't get.

    4. “My twenties are paralyzing,” she said. “No one told me it would be this hard.”

It sucks having to live the life your parents wanted to live but couldn't do that. Having to fulfill what your parents were missing is consuming of your own life, I do the same thing with my father and it takes up so much of my energy because he doesn't want me to "be like him".

    1. while working as a stripper, Cardi began posting funny, off-the-cuff monologues to social media

this is where she also gained her popularity, through her social media. i even remember seeing small skits/videos she would make and post on instagram. again, seeing her going from being a stripper to then being smart with her social media platform to where she is today fascinates me because of her growth.

    2. was surprised to realize that she had never been shot by a black photographer.

isn't it crazy how she was basically fascinated at the fact that her photographer was a black photographer? it shows you who does control the business and also some of even the most common problems now.

    3. “But now it’s all changing. We are being asked to stand up, just like my mother did.”

the ending quote stuck out the most, and a perfect way to tie in the article together. the author used great facts about the politician and make me feel a certain type of way towards them as well. also to bring up their family in the ending as well makes us feel connected to them, especially coming from a hispanic family.

    4. But the money freed her to get her own apartment and ditch the boyfriend, who she has said was abusive.

I think it's a cool story to tell whenever someone comes up from doing something their can be so disappointed in what the have to do to get their money in, but she went from leaving an abusive relationship while working at a strip club to being a well known female rap artist.

    1. BAD: Mr. Smith said that he liked to “go downtown once a week and have lunch with some of my old friends.” GOOD: “I usually like to go downtown once a week,” Mr. Smith said, “and have lunch with some of my old friends.”

this is a good example on how to place your quotations, especially because i can see a lot of people believing that the first one is correct, even though it also doesn't make a whole lot of sense.placing the quotations and structuring the sentence makes the biggest difference in your writing especially when characters are having have a conversation with one another.

    2. He made a literary arrangement, pretending to have spent one afternoon being shown around the cemetery,

i like how he put himself in his position, in his mindset, and his thought to get the real feeling of what Mr. Hunter was feeling and was trying to say

    3. The nonfiction writer’s rare privilege is to have the whole wonderful world of real people to write about

i never really noticed how "lucky" nonfiction authors could be, because you get to write about real life people. but even if you think about it, any writing can be real to anyone. fiction writers even have the privilege to write about whatever they could be thinking about.

    4. By careful manipulation he raised the craft of nonfiction to art.

i noticed that a lot of people end up manipulating their work to a different for of art to fit something else but i found it interesting how he didn't want to change Mr. Hunter's 'truth' because that was something that needed to stay the same for him.

    5. accretion

a noun; "the process of growth or increase, typically by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or matter" and also can be used in astronomy. the way this word is being used is by the first definition.

    1. it’s one between two demented people who have had the skill or luck to find a non-threatening conscious accommodation between their relative insanities.

A relationship is a commitment, which people tend to forget when entering one. You have to continue to work through it like you're starting it again every day-- or just work through it. When you are in a real relationship, you have two people working things out, not just one.

    2. Choosing the wrong partner: We try to get together with people who don’t really suit us, because we don’t understand our needs

It's true. We want to make things work for the best of us, but forcing it makes it worse. We think we chose the right person because it looks right, but it never feels right. We tend to ignore our needs to fulfill our wants, and what we want is to feel love but what we need is actual love-- not just something that looks good.

    3. We might become inadvertent snobs: liking things because others like them rather than for deeper personal reasons.

This also ties in with what I said before, we tend to gravitate towards thing because everyone has that thing too. It's like when people stop wearing one thing, like fanny packs for example; we stopped wearing them for almost a decade and next thing you know-- everyone starts wearing them like it's brand new. People like to follow trends and people like to spend money.

    4. We’ll be prey to fashion: not knowing ourselves, we’ll be at the mercy of what consumer society tells us to want.

It's crazy how realistic this is. We're all trying to match with the trends, but then again, that has been going on for decades now. We don't really NEED these clothes, but we tend to gravitate towards them because everyone does too.

    1. “Perfectionism”

Perfectionism is a refusal to anything that isn't perfect, but what does the author believe perfectionism is? The believe that it is the voice of the oppressor, believes that it can ruin your writing, and they believe that it is so many other things, especially when it comes to writing.

    2. A writer friend of mine suggests opening the jar and shooting them all in the head. But I think he’s a little angry, and I’m sure nothing like this would ever occur to you.

I love the way the author describes how to put peoples opinions to the side, and this small paragraph gives it a little bit of humor. To make yourself think that those negative thoughts can be put away like putting away a rat in a jar, can actually help so many people, like us students as well.

    3. when it was time for another review, the whole process would start again, complete with the fears that people would find my first draft before I could rewrite it.

When having your writing reviewed, it tends to put her in fear. Since she is a writer and she wants her writing to go somewhere she has to get it reviewed, but all she has to feel is fear because she is scared of the rejection someone can have in her writing

    4. If you believe, then this God of yours might be capable of relieving you of some of this perfectionism.

This line stood out to me the most in this paragraph, mentioning a religion in anything can be a little taboo, but the way the author tied it together made it make sense. Talking about perfectionism and saying whatever you believe, that could make it happen for you.

    5. I know I set out to tell you every single thing I know about writing, but I am also going to tell you every single thing I know about school lunches

when reading this, my initial thought was that they're going to be comparing a school lunch to writing and how it can effect it in different ways

    1. No longer will I be there to knock on your door, so you must learn to knock for yourself. Knock knock down doors of racism and poverty that I could not

His father is not able to attend his life like he used to and he wants him to be strong for himself, he wants him to do what he couldn't. He wants him to show others that because of his race, it doesn't he isn't capable of a future, because of his race it doesn't mean that he should belong in jail, and because of his race it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be an issue. Racism is a big thing that we still deal with in our time and his father telling him this and for it to be something that he has still not forgotten is something that young black men should not have to fear.

    2. I was raised by women

Being raised by women is actually something I grew up with, and reading through this actually made me realize how independent I grew up to be with them around me.

    3. And “Baby,” I’ll tell her “don’t keep your nose up in the air like that, I know that trick, you’re just smelling for smoke so you can follow the trail back to a burning house so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fire to see if you can save him. Or else, find the boy who lit the fire in the first place to see if you can change him.”

Reading through the poem, this paragraph is the one that stood out to me the most. Taking care of a young girl is hard and this paragraph shows how hard it can be when a young girl finds a boy who is broken and they believe they can be changed and saved through everything that boy has been through but in reality, the boy is the one doing the most damage. The mother knows that but she just wants her daughter to learn, and the best way to learn is to learn through mistakes.
