    1. We want all Black men to be exempt from military service.

The Black Panthers Ten Point Plan is a list of 10 wants/ demands the African Americans expect to be given to them. Most of this list is understandable as it is a part of being an American citizen. This demand that they "want all Black men to be exempt from military service" is a pretty radical unrealistic idea. This is a part of what comes with being an American citizen. All men when they turn 18 will have to sign up for the draft as a part of their responsibility. Just because they are black does not mean they should be exempt from this.

    1. Millions of young men tried to evade the draft: some fled to Canada; many feigned physical or mental illness, others used family connections to gain safe positions in the National Guard

For millions of men to evade the draft this shows how terrible and frightening the war must have really been. For that many to be drafted is astonishing, but for the majority of young men at the time to completely change their life plans around shows how it must have really been terrifying to go into war instead. The news traveled negatively towards to war so everyone did anything they could to avoid it. To even say they had a mental illness is pretty extreme to try say. These men were afraid of being shipped off to die or even if they did survive then they were afraid of how they would return after it was all over.

    1. In the Lincoln Day speech at Wheeling Thursday night I stated that the State Department harbors a nest of Communists and Communist sympathizers who are helping to shape our foreign policy. I further stated that I have in my possession the names of 57 Communists who are in the State Department at present. A State Department spokesman promptly denied this, claiming that there is not a single Communist in the Department.

This shows that there were Communists in the government at the time even though no one wanted there to be any. It was extremely secretive since the President of the United States himself did not want any Communist affiliated people to be associated with the government. Many when found out where very publicly shamed and attempted to be forced to be taken out of office/position.

    2. Karl Marx dismissed God as a hoax, and Lenin and Stalin have added in clear-cut, unmistakable language their resolve that no nation, no people who believe in a god, can exist side by side with their communistic state.

By stating that Karl Marx, the leader of Communism, "dismisses God as a hoax" it gets Americans to go against Communism. During this time mainly everyone was a big believer in God. By having this ideal go against God it puts a target on their backs to get majority of Americans to join together to end Communism for a common interest.

    1. But here in Free America with protection in full sway,His workmen get the freedom of the grave.

America was known to be the "land of the free" full of the chance of prosperity no matter your background, but may not be as free compared to other countries. In this statement they are comparing their city to Scotland which supposedly has freedom for its people and workers. America instead has "freedom of the grave" which could mean that the only freedom these people have are to work until they die.

    1. In thirty-five years the city of less than a hundred thousand came to harbor half a million souls,

For New York City to grow from less than a hundred thousand people to half a million in just 35 years shows how many immigrants are moving to big cities to find jobs. However this shows that there most likely is not enough space for people or jobs for them if so many are coming in at such a fast rate. The city is obviously going to get overcrowded as it can not support these people so fast.

    1. we are daily receiving letters from all parts of the country from parties desiring to locate in the great Solomon Valley of Western Kansas.

This area of newly claimed land that people are trying to make into their homes and a town is clearly thriving. They not only have already set up a treasury with members, have officers, have nearly 300 members, and provisions for this colony. The news clearly must be catching on to other surrounding areas if they are getting letters from many different people wanting to relocate in the Solomon Valley also. This is a change from some places and stories considering some people were hesitant to move to the West since there was known to be hardship. It was hard to set up a system, build houses, get a town full of enough people, and to get up offices. This story of this town being able to do it so quickly and successfully is a change from many other perspectives of people who attempted to do the same. This story of this colony inspires people to move out west because if they did it that shows other ordinary people that they could too.

    1. You had to take the white man’s work on note, and everything. Anything you wanted, you could git if you were a good hand. You could git anything you wanted as long as you worked. If you didn’t make no money, that’s all right; they would advance you more. But you better not leave him, you better not try to leave and get caught. They’d keep you in debt. They were sharp.

It was the "white man's" world still after slavery. The blacks could be given help to get what they wanted and make more money, but if they asked the white man for help they would be entitled to them yet again. They always knew how to keep them in debt since they were smarter.

    2. I was treated nicely. My father and mother were too. Others were not treated so well. But you know how Negroes is. They would slip off and go out. If they caught them, he would put them in a log hut they had for a jail.

This shows how most slaves were not treated well, but the author and his parents were treated well. Slaves had to obey their owners and ask for permission to do anything.

    3. There wasn’t nothin‘ hard about it. Just hitch the mules to one another’s tail and drive them ’round and 'round. There wasn’t no lines. Just hitch them to one another’s tail and tell them to git up.

This writing is all first person, but the language shows how the people especially slaves talked at this time. The writer uses slang and incorrect English showing that him and presumably most slaves were uneducated.

    1. Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.

The whole letter it seemed that the salve owner and slave had a good relationship where they respected each other, but at the very end the slave mentions that the owner tried to shoot him... Then was the relationship between the two actually decent or was the slave just trying to flatter the owner in the whole letter?

    2. it was no disgrace in Tennessee to belong to Col. Anderson. Many darkies would have been proud, as I used to be, to call you master.

The author was recently a slave and is still feeling prejudice even though slaves are becoming free in the year it was written. He was close with his slave master and had a good relationship with him where he was "proud" to call him master.
