Even though the Nazi image is made of living men, by living men, its beauty is dead.
It's easy to judge when you are at this point in history. What if you were standing in the troop as one of the soldiers?
we’re a master race destined to conquer the world and our leader knows what he’s doing, guided by fate
Are we a superorganism?
the elegance of science,
solarpunk aesthetics is currently the world’s best ticket to getting normal people to change the world, thereby saving human civilization.
hmmm i thought your point was that people would change but for the price of sacrificing democracy?
Now, instead, imagine showing our medieval friends a video of a new home with running water and all the food available at the grocery store, and their interest might be peaked. Okay, that got me interested. How do we get there?
Yes. Sometimes this strategy works. Once at protests in 2019 in Hong Kong, some Hong Kongers held up signs in shopping malls that were frequented by visitors from mainland China for baby milk powders because none of the brands in China are trustworthy. They most likely had very misled opinions about the protest due the state-controlled media. The signs read, "without democracy, there won't be reliable baby formular", suggesting the link between food safety and governance style. I found it quite smart.
Here he was shown a replica of an American household with all the newest home appliances and was shocked to see the level of affluence enjoyed by ordinary middleclass Americans.
What's the point here? It is exactly the American consumerism that destroys the planet, remember?
If the citizens of the free world do not soon begin to offer viable alternatives to authoritarian solarpunk, the battle for human dreams and desires will very likely be won by authoritarian powers. People will gladly sell out their freedom and democracy for a chance to live in what looks like an ideal society.
I don't agree. Come on. Only those who would marry someone for their look will move to somewhere just for the appearance. And if they think the lack of democracy and freedom guarantees smoothly running social order, then they deserve to live in a society without. Look at those Trumpians.
If the beauties and allure that capture the global public imagination and aesthetically define “the good life” are solarpunk-based, and if solarpunk is increasingly in the hands of authoritarian powers — what do you think will happen?
All the ecovillages, earthship and permaculture stuff can also be solarpunk.
the super-rich create mansions and keep art galleries alive, the Catholic church raised cathedrals, and so forth, while communist or social democrat apartment blocks are generally functional and uninspiring — hence, the Louvre is not filled with 20th century stuff, but with stuff from more unequal and authoritarian days.
Hmmm I'm not so sure that this is a good argument here. Everyone concerns with hygiene and order.
Its predation weeds out the sickly, preventing the much uglier injustice of collective weakness and disease,
Eugenics?
The failure of socialist revolutions taught us that well.
Unfortunately, like every other species on the planet, we’re conservative: we don’t change our ways unless necessity forces us.
That's not true. only the conservatives of us are conservative!

This reminds me of the story in the big book where a robot was elected pope!!!

This new vision of smartness is inextricably tied to the language of crisis, whether a financial, ecological, or security event.
smartness and crisis a deliberate use of tactic to generate fear? or an honest statement of our common threat?
This comment demonstrates one of the biggest misconceptions about kindness: that kind people are docile, accepting, and spineless. That—to avoid rocking the boat or inciting confrontation—they will meekly accept other people’s bad behavior and overlook injustice.
kindness doesn't equal to cowardice
That radical notion — that we are not, in fact, at the center of the universe — gives rise to what modern scientists call the Copernican Principle: We are not privileged observers of the world around us. We don't occupy a unique place in the universe. We are profoundly ordinary. We are not special.
