This is amazing. SO many RAG systems out there overlook this really obvious chunking strategy.

In my opinion this is theoretically so much better than GraphRAG or RAPTOR strategies.

Couple of downsides I see: - still does not let you uncover hidden cross-document meanings, where clusterization might help; - what if document is really really big - for chunk-specific context generation you would need to pass raw big docs in that prompt and with all that amount of chunks the processing time and cost is going to be unbearable. Yes, prompt caching, but still... Might need to sacrifice chunk context for pre-processing time as you're going to be treating "book chapters" as individual docs now rather than providing whole "book" for chunk context generation.

Improvements: - what if on top of re-ranking we'll also add LLM filtering stage? AFAIK re-ranking models are still kind of primitive to understand the relevance of chunks to user query. But now that we have additional context LLMs should do a pretty good job at evaluating which chunks that came out of re-ranking are meaningful to user query; - prompt LLM to generate chunk context in batches (e.g. of 10).
