    1. The model curriculum shall be developed with participation from faculty of ethnic studies programs at universities and colleges with ethnic studies programs and a group of representatives of local educational agencies

How much of a voice will these experts be given? After the original committee wanted to take their names off of the model curriculum I can imagine many experts felt discouraged from participating. And who gets the final say on what the implemented curriculum actually looks like?

    1. Instructional Quality Commissio

Who are these people and why were they given this role? What changes did they have to make after the controversy and All Lives Matter movement emergence in order to make Ethnic Studies courses more "acceptable"?

    1. excellent educational opportunities

To me the phrase excellent educational opportunities implies culturally relevant pedagogy that keeps students engaged and reflects themselves in the curriculum, which is what a successful ethnic studies course would do.

    1. provide all pupils with excellent educational opportunities, without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, income, sexual orientation, or disability.

In a state where this is a requirement and there is so much ethnic and cultural diversity it seems like a no brainer to include ethnic studies in the curriculum. The students are the target audience for instruction so teaching them about their own histories will obviously be more relevant and engaging.

    1. Not teach or promote religious doctrine

This seems potentially limiting to me because it could be expansive to learn about other religions such as Indigenous American practices or practices of ancestors of Mexican Americans. Is teaching religious doctrine the same as promoting it?

    2. Not reflect or promote, directly or indirectly, any bias, bigotry, or discrimination against any person or group of persons on the basis of any category protected by Section 220

Perhaps this clause is intended to protect the requirement from a shutdown of the program as was achieved HB 2281 in Arizona with the MARS program. This section seems obvious but it clarifies for people who are scared of this liberating curriculum that it is not intended to be divisive but to create further unity and solidarity.

    1. anonymous blog comments

His true colors coming out. Living in the same neighborhood as someone of a different race doesn't make you their ally. These superficial interactions he described like playing sports and seeing Mexican-Americans at school don't necessarily lead to a greater understanding and respect between groups.

    2. teaches kids to hate

Teaching kids the facts about histories of oppression is their educational right. The role of teachers is to present them with the truth and help them make sense of it, not guide them towards an emotional reaction of anger and hatred. Ethnic Studies proponents understand this, though superintendents seem to make accusations based on fear.

    1. support of AB 2772

The graphic campaign for this cause is really beautiful and clever in its usage of graphics for various different causes that come together seamlessly in this poster image. For example, the California poppy representing a California native alongside the black panther and the monarch butterfly representing immigration. For me it represents how unity in Ethnic Studies is in the best interest of all these groups.
