    1. Never say that you’ll give a talk unless you know clearly what you’re going to talk about and more or less what you’re going to say.

This is very good advice and I believe more people need to hear this. It is not necessary to speak your opinion on everything, especially if you dont know what youre talking about or what you're going to say.

    1. Other experimenters will repeat your experiment and find out whether you were wrong or right.

For a theory to become "right" it would take many different trials. For a theory to be proven wrong, it also has to fail more than one time. It's always good to have experiments working both ways.

    2. So I call these things Cargo Cult Science, because they follow all the apparent precepts and forms of scientific investigation, but they’re missing something essential, because the planes don’t land.

Is a science that is missing something automatically called a Cargo Cult Science? Is a theory that is missing something the only thing that makes something a Cargo Cult Science?

    3. science that isn’t science

Science has a definite definition; "an intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment". But when using science in context, everyone could have a different idea of what constitutes the definition.

    4. Or a parent of bad boys, after disciplining them in one way or another, feels guilty for the rest of her life because she didn’t do “the right thing,” according to the experts.

It doesnt always matter how parents raise their children. They can be perfect examples for their children, but the kids won't always follow in their footsteps.

    1. At  what  point  will  you  need  to  persist  in  spite  of  failures,  set  backsand  rejections? If  you  are  a  student-‐athlete,  you  already  know  how  that  goes.  Athletes  don’t  quit  every  time  they  lose  a  game  or  a  match.  They  get  up.  They  practice  again. They  get  older.  They  compete  against  more  talented  athletes.  They  lose.  They  practice  again.  They  get  older.

Coming from an athletic background and always being involved in sports until the last few months, this example really helped put this in perspective for me. You can't just give up when things get tough, this is when it is the most important to try harder. Persistance is a big key to being successful

    2. Howeveryou  did  it,  did  it  ever  occur  to  you  that  there  is  more  than  one  way  to  do  a  simple  math  problem  in  your

Just like this math problem, there are multiple approaches to solving a wide variety of problems in life. Most of the time we are so concerned with finding the answer that we don't take a second to stop and think about how to solve it. There is almost always an easier approach to things than our first instinct.

    3. Well,  first  try  thinking  about  a  college  degree  like  a  Swiss  Army  knife.  It’s  not  one  thing;  it’s  many  things—a  coordinated  collection  of  tools  designed  for  all  kinds  of  contingencies  in  the  “field.”

I like this analogy and think it fits very well. I have always enjoyed classes that pertain to my major more than the other ones i am required to take, but I do see the point in taking other classes that could add to your knowledge about basic concepts.

    4.  But  college  is  not  the  singular  rite  of  passage  it  used  to

I feel like this continues to become more true everyday. A college degree wont get you as far as it used to, at least that's what i keep hearing from my parents. Even in a particular field, it is becoming more and more competitive to get into graduate school and successfully land a job; this is another reason all of the classes should be taken very seriously while we're here.

    5.  ask  questions  (BIG QUESTIONS),  be  professional,  own  your  own  mistakes,  experiment,  appreciate  points  of  view  that  are  different  from  your  own,  be  on  time,  read  deeply,  communicate  complex  ideas,  tolerate  uncertainty,  and  make  connections  between  seemingly  unrelated

This differs from how things were in high school. It seemed like we were just there because we had to be and to graduate. So far at Marshall, it seems like all of the professors want you to succeed and do their best to help you reach your goals. All of this advice is very important for success.
