    1. The success of such a machine de- pends on the material used in it.

In the music classroom, there are a lot of great tools to help teachers keep up with their student's progression and success. At the IMEA conference, there were presentations for all kinds of new material that would essentially "teach" the music to the students and keep track of their success. Some examples are McGraw Hill's 'Voices in Music' and 'SmartMusic' by Finale.

    2. The student must compose his response rather than select it from a set of alternatives,

I do not like multiple choice tests for the reason that some teachers like to put the answers very close together, as in the correct answer will be within a word or two of another (wrong) choice. You cant study for a multiple choice quiz the same way you may study for a short answer quiz. For a full response, you need to know the material in its entirety in order to get a correct answer. For multiple choice, you not only need to know the right answer, but also all the other wrong choices that there could possibly be, and when it comes down to verbatim, choosing the correct answer is just a guessing game for some students. What do you guys think about multiple choice in a Quiz/Test grade?

    3. The student is becoming more ,~nd morrx a mere passive receiver of in- struction

This is applicable today as well. I feel as though a lot of teachers and professors rely heavily on technology to run their classroom in lectures. When this has happened, at least for me, the class has become significantly less engaging. This may be why a student that is watching a teacher give a powerpoint lecture may be more likely to fall asleep. On the opposite end, if a teacher is engaging and tries to rely more on their presentation and body language, the student might receive the information better.

    1. In the most general sense, the contemporaryview of learning is that people construct new knowledge and understand-ings based on what they already know and believe

This is very evident through the use of media and politics as well. Someone's beliefs can allow them to view a topic differently from someone else. This can cause issues, especially in the classroom.

    2. They come to formal education witha range of prior knowledge, skills, beliefs, and concepts that significantlyinfluence what they notice about the environment and how they organizeand interpret it.

SO as a music educator, how do I assess this prior knowledge with my students? Does the prior knowledge affect the students in a negative way when approaching music? Not all "prior knowledge" can be correct, right? Because people can develop bad techniques and habits that can be hard to break in the future.

    3. Anunderstanding of veins and arteries does not guarantee an answer to thisdesign question

Of course you can't account for everything when it is studied in a book or even researched to an extent. Though I still think that providing a good base knowledge is important when handling problems or troubleshooting.
