    1. We begin with ourselves.

This sentence really stood out to me because it automatically made me think. How can we tell others to be just and equal if we aren't that first? We need to all work on ourselves before we can try and work on others. Chances are, once we work on ourselves that is a huge step in the right direction.

    2. our crimes against ourselves echo and haunt and damn and eviscerate us. It is not  enough (not in 1955 when the essay was published, not today) to think that we can leave our memories checked at some dismal door of gerrymandered elections or xenophobic nationalism or sycophantic equalities.

I think this quote is describing how the actions we have made in the past will always effect us in the future. We shouldn't try and forget what happened in the past because even if the memories aren't good ones, it's important for us to remember our mistakes so we don't make them again. Also if we forget or don't make it as bad as it was; if we ignore their suffering then we aren't doing their memory justice.
