    1. Somegames,likeopen‐endedrole‐playinggames(RPGS),havenoVictorycon‑dition.Asaresult,somedesignersdonotconsiderthemgames.

RPG games that are open ended with no end are seemingly rare. While it is true that a game may take weeks or longer, the adventure comes to an end. Everything that you have built up within the last game stays, but new adventures begin.

    2. Bydefinition,allgameshaveplayerssinceit’stheplayerswhosettherulesinmotion.

This is interesting. The way they describe the player, is as if the players are just another piece of the game.

    3. Risk

This is a great strategic game. My father taught me how to play it when I was 10. I found that it was a great why to learn to think ahead.

    1. uccessful strategies have emerged, butplayers can experiment with new ways of interacting with the game and with new strategies.

One of my favorite games that showcases this the best is Final Fantasy. I have played the series 1-12 and in each one, no game is ever the same. Each time you play the game, with each decision that you make, you change the game.

    2. Games of pure chance can grow boring because there is no opportunity forimprovement, while improvement in games of pure strategy can require a huge commitment tostudying and mastering the actions and reactions found in established styles of play.

This is why Monopoly is so popular, while games such as Guess Who petered out. Guessing games are good for one round or two but that is about the extent of it.

    3. Based on the square where theplayer’s pawn lands, something happens

The basic of this method helps make playing games for small children easier. No matter the rules, they can learn to count the roll or spin and move to the bright color square.

    4. Just like readersfollow authors, gamers will follow game designers

This is true, with video games I like certain designers more than others. Also in broader strokes, there are also some games that are only computer or console based and there are preferences in the the design for how it is to be played. Some designers only design on format.

    5. an overwhelming drive tocreate a version of Monopoly for every possible theme.

That is because Monopoly is one of the best games there is. You can finish it in an hour or play it for twelve hours.

    1. “He has learned no language logic, just a succession of letter sequences giving rise to words.

This is actually a good thing. Since he is not tying the words to the language and only to a flow of letters, it makes it easier for a game that is all about the word and has nothing to do with the use of those words.

    2. At the very elite level, Scrabble skills rely more on an ability to calculate mathematical probabilities than on linguistic facility.

He made spelling into a math equation! That is perfect!

    3. “I said, ‘I know a game you’re not going to be very good at, because you can’t spell very well and you weren’t very good at English at school’,”

I find this funny because I am fairly good at Scrabble and can win 2 out of 3 games that I play. I am a exceedingly bad speller. Though, I know weird words and short words which will usually allow me to use triple word or double word scores that are blocked by weird letters or that do not have many spaces.

    4. “He doesn’t speak French at all – he just learned the words,”

You don't have to speak the language to learn the words. For Scrabble it only matters if you can spell.

    1. Developing resources for future learning and problem solving in thesemiotic domains to which the game is related

I am a old school gamer and I stopped after the PS2, but I have to say from Mario Bro. to Pac-Man to Final Fantasy, the one thing that I always loved about these games where that you had to think not just of what to do in the moment but what was coming next. Each level or stage of the game was going to be harder and more challenging. These games can help teens to think about life, as it is true that as we get older and advance through life, things get ore challenging.

    2. But meaning for wordsand symbols is specific to particular situations and particular semiotic do-mains.

This is why there are slang dictionaries and multiple definitions for a word in a regular dictionary. Words may make up a language, but a word in itself can be a language.

    3. move beyond fixating on reading as silently saying the sounds of letters andwords and being able to answer general, factual, and dictionarylike questionsabout written texts.

Schools teach reading for no other reason that to be able to read. The schools with the best readers are schools with arts that allow the students to connect with the readings. It is one thing to read about a girl who loses her puppy, it is another to teach them to act it out and then to understand what the words mean.

    4. Many a superhero comic is replete with post-Freudian ironyof a sort that would make a modern literary critic’s heart beat fast and confuseany otherwise normal adult.

Wonder Woman is based on D.I.S.C. theory. Her creator was also living in a polyamorous relationship which also influenced the comic.

    5. Both modes and multimodality go far beyond images and wordsto include sounds, music, movement, bodily sensations, and smells.

I have to say that music is very helpful in literacy. People can actually learn lessons that are set to music easier as the melody helps the words take root in the neural pathways.

    6. Knowing how to read interior designs in homes, modernist art in muse-ums, and videos on MTV are other forms of visual literacy.

People look at modern art the way they read poetry. It truly doesn't matter what the artist wanted to say, everyone is going to "read" it the way they want to.

    7. First, in the modern world, language is not the only important commu-nicational system.

This is a fact that most over look when thinking of language. When I think of language other than words, I always thing of body language or drawing that a young child would make. They may not be able to tell you everything that they want to, but their body can speak for them, or a picture will tell a story that they can not form words to express.

    1. because many of you have likely never designed a (meaningful) game before, it's probably asking a lot of you,

When thinking of designing a game all I can think of is that every game I can think of has already been made. That is why there are so many versions of classic games such as Monopoly and Clue.

    2. Practical considerations for using games in libraries and other contexts will also be addressed

I am actually responsible for running the monthly games at work, so I look forward to this in hopes that it will also increase the level of fun.
