    1. Specializedmemegeneratorappsformobilephonesmadeiteasytocreateimagemacromemesontheruntosharewithone’s friendsandcontacts.

I didn't know this. I am so clueless when it comes to memes. I have no idea how to make them and didn't know it was that easy. Which is why I haven't create my own yet, thought it would be a lot harder than that.

    2. Peopledressas “memes” forHalloween,andAmazon.comsellsbooksofmemes andmeme-basedboardgames.Advertisingagenciestradeonmemesandmemereferencesintheircampaigns.

I know that people do this but didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. This is funny. How memes evolved into now dressing up, board games, books and more!

This in really interesting. I would not of thought about trends and tendencies with memes. I wouldn't have thought of collecting data with memes. That is cool.

    1. Games are systems because at some level, they are mathematical systems ofrules. But if games were just math, we would never have the athletic ballet-ics of tennis, the bluffing warfare of poker, or the deep collaborationof World of Warcraft (Blizzard, 2004).

I found this interesting as I am a math teacher. I like the rules of math, they make it easy to solve and follow the process. But I can see how if games were just math, it wouldn't be as fun.

    2. Being able to successfully understand, navigate, modify, and design systems will become more and more inextric-ably linked with how we learn, work, play, and live as engaged worldcitizens.Sys

When I was completing the survey, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the concept of systems with video games, game design and gaming literacy. I liked this whole paragraph on systems and it helped to shed light on a concept I was struggling with.

    3. t is important to be very clear here: gaming literacy is not about justany kind of real-world impact—it is a specific form of literacy.

I like that the author gave a clear definition of what gaming literacy was. Then when on to talk about what it was not about. It was very helpful for me and my understanding.

    1. John Dewey, expressed the spirit of his philosophy of pragmatism in the idea that education should be grounded in experience, not abstract discipli-nary schemes, imposed by teachers upon students

I still struggle with John Dewey's idea of learning through experience. In a math class, using experience to teach new material is a little challenging because not all students have the same experience. To know where all students are at with their experience is tough.

    2. In the ‘flipped classroom’ (Bishop and Verleger 2013), the teacher records a video of their lecture and distributes it online. However, the student remains in the same discursive relation to the teacher and knowledge as originally prescribed by St Benedict.

I like the idea of the 'flipped classroom' but I did not think about the student being in the same boring process. I thought the 'flipped classroom' would be a fun and exciting way to learn.

    3. Mass- institutionalized schooling is a relatively new thing in human history. As a social project, it is barely a century and a half old, and to the extent that not every child goes to school, still incomplete.

I had not thought about that institutionalized school was a relatively new thing. I just I just assumed it always happened but it hasn't. Hands on learning at home was the first stages of learning, being in a classroom learning curriculum is a new concept relative to humans.

    1. students TK sorry teachers all teachers getting a day to interview their students to get to know them kind of like what Kate mentioned with her students so we asked students what they

I really like this idea. Helps to make a connection with students and building that connection helps students buy in to their education. I know it would be hard for a high school teacher since we typically have 150 students or so but I still like this idea.

    2. city as the classroom is really exciting engagement and the way that youth interest is connecting to that space so it's great to see the kids to you guys

I liked that they used the city as a classroom. How many times does real life experience increase learning over just what you read in a book, every time. Students can relate and engage better with that.

    1. ‘‘productive and gen-erative’’ activity that builds relationships and connections across individualsof differing backgrounds

I love this quote because many students don't voice their opinions out loud but it is easier to write them down. Sharing them through a letter to the president, in a way others can read. This creates connections across differing backgrounds because students and adults can relate to each others concerns.

    2. There have been recent shifts to measure, assess, and support civic liter-acy practices in schools

Reading these letters shows a recent increase in civic literacy practices in high schools by allowing students to voice their concerns in their lives. Students have many concerns that a lot of us adults have too.

    3. Despite civic literature showing declining civic participation from low-income youth of color leading to widening gaps in civic learning andempowerment, Watts and Flanagan (2007) critique how such findings treatyouth attitudes and dispositions as fundamental to the ‘‘problem’’

It isn't easy to tell from the articles I picked if some or all of the students are low-income youth. But based on some of their concerns, you can tell they are of color and maybe low-income. We need to listen to all students, even if we can't relate to their concerns.

    4. ‘Civic education shouldhelp young people acquire and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and atti-tudes that will prepare them to be competent and responsible citizensthroughout their lives’

The letters I found show students education has helped them become aware of issues that come up in their lives and how it affects them. Allowing them to voice their opinions on what impacts them will encourage them to be better citizens.

    5. Recognizing the many different demands, hopes, and fears voiced byyouth within these letters, our analysis explores what issues were mostimportant to the diverse students

All of the letters I read addressed different fears youth talked about and have experience with in their lives.

It is always helpful to know what we will be learning in the class to help make connections with the assignments and be able to link the knowledge together.

    2. Full  descriptions  of  each  assignmentand  corresponding  rubrics

I like how there are descriptions of the assignments along with rubrics. If I was on top of my assignments I would be able to see what the assignments were about and do some planning.
