The note that her mother insists she wears the silver finger rosary is super interesting. I think it comments on how religion in a family thing. It is something that is passed down through families, and how a person usually practices the same religion as their parents, grandparents, etc. The emphasis on familial connection with religion shows the cultural importance of one's identification with religion.

This section really describes the "I'm going to put my thoughts in a corner and ignore them until they either explode or disappear." Tambu is so conflicted with her own feelings that she is starting to contradict herself. Earlier, she talked about how dangerous it was to ignore her feelings about her cousins; however, she is busying herself with household chores. She wants to confront her feelings, but she is so conflicted about the relationships between her and her cousins that she is ignoring any feeling whether good or bad she has.

This particular section really focuses on the masculine qualities of Jake. For example, Adam's apples are only something those born as a male. Stressed veins and a thick neck are also stereotypical characteristics of men, particularly strong men. Lowe focuses on these because it is what he has been doing for so long, noticing what he has and what he does not have. This slight detail to enhance Jake's masculinity is to combat Lowe's own identity.

The word "bellowed" really reminds me of an animal. It showed the wildness of Bertha's character; however, in reading Wide Sargasso Sea we understand Antoinette as a character instead of a plot tool.

I think this particular use of "fire" really symbolizes the knowledge of the existence of Bertha in this scene. Grace Poole is one of the only people to know of her presence in the estate, and there is a reason she is bent over the fire and not someone else.
