    1. In Shanghai, one of Asia’s most important economic engines, water threatens to consume the heart of the city and many other cities around it.

They say: If the water level keeps going up, Shanghai will be dangerous, and the other cities around it will too.

I say: Shanghai is a coastal city in China, the rising water level will definitely change this city a lot. As the economic heart of Asia, if Shanghai gets down, then it will have a bad influence in Asia's economy or the world's economy. Therefore, rising sea is very dangerous to our life, and we need to do all we can do to save our planet.

    2. In Thailand, more than 10 percent of citizens now live on land that is likely to be inundated by 2050, compared with just 1 percent according to the earlier technique. The political and commercial capital, Bangkok, is particularly imperiled.

They say: If the sea level keeps rising, some part of Thailand will be inundated by 2050, and this will affect 10% of the citizens in Thailand.

I say: Climate change will have a big affect to the whole world, especially for the coastal country area like Vietnam, Thailand and etc. This change will not only affect where people lives but also thier working environment; thus, it will also has a big affect on a country's economic status. This is a very severe problem that we all need to fix.

    1. Climate change heightens the risk. As rainfall becomes more erratic, the water supply becomes less reliable. At the same time, as the days grow hotter, more water evaporates from reservoirs just as demand for water increases.

They say: Nowadays, the temperature is getting higher and higher, and this is one of the factor that caused the drought. As the temperature increased, the water evaporates causing the drought.

I say: Global warming has becoming a severe issue around the world. In order to save the water, to save the world, we are not only need to cut down water usage or wasting water but also need to do something to stop global warming.

    2. From India to Iran to Botswana, 17 countries around the world are currently under extremely high water stress, meaning they are using almost all the water they have, according to new World Resources Institute data published Tuesday.

They say: There are 17 countries around the world are facing the drought, and they didn't have any water supplies. Therefore, they are using whatever water they have.

I say: This is very sad to hear, and I feel sorry for those people. Compare to them, we are very lucky. It's a shame that today in the United States or other developed countires, some people are still wasting water resources because they still don't know how important the water resureces are. From now on, I think we should all do our best to save the water resources.

    1. “I came to this understanding for myself that gender was projected onto my body, and I don’t need to alter my body to affirm my gender or align with one gender or another.”

Wow, what a strong sentence! She is 100% right, because the gender is what projected onto someone's body, focing someone or themselves to change gender definitely not the way to help someone to find self-identity. This sencence show's Moore's attitude, which is great !

    2. At that time, around 2013, Moore, who is black, was living in Tucson and had few friends of color — and even fewer who were gender-nonconforming

Reading this line, I felt very sad for her because not only she has very little amount of colored friends but also she's the only one that who's ambiguous of her gender. She must be very lonely, and that why I felt bad for her when reading this line.

    1. Mainland tourists have multiplied from about two million per year to 40 million, sometimes more.

Mainland tourists actually boosted up Hong Kong's economy for the past few years; howerver, because of the protest, the number of mainland tourists is decreasing dramatically. It's thier lost.

    2. “They’re miserable,” he said. “As mainlanders buy apartments here, prices have become difficult to afford. So the conflict is about, first, jobs. Then housing. And then life.”

This is the common issue in China. However, no one really complain about it. The rise price of house is the common issue around the wrold, even in the US we have the same problem. Instead of complaining, people should really work harder and save up money. Complaining doesn't help you to buy the house, isn't it?

    3. Hong Kong’s eruption into monthslong protests may have been the result not only of Beijing’s overreach, but also of seismic changes in Hong Kong identity itself, according to new research and opinion polling.

Beijing is not overreach!!! The government of China always supported Hong Kong local government and this is why China is called "one country two systems." Moreover, Hong Konger are getting so many benefits from mainland, I really don't know what is the point of this protest!

    1. It's as if the entire populations of California, Texas, Florida and New York all decided to go swimming in the same spot together.

I felt like this is a little bit exaggerated because number of this population is very big, how can people all fit in to the river? However, I get the idea there are a lot of people joined this event.

    2. Rich and poor, tourists and ascetic monks, all squat side by side, chanting mantras.

This is nice to see that people from all around the world come together because of the same belief. This is amazing.

    3. The government officials and religious authorities who organize the event estimate that 15 million people showed up on Tuesday, the opening day.

It's good to see that government officials show thier supports to thier people.

    1. Moreover, people of all physical variations have learned different cultural behaviors and continue to do so as modern transportation moves millions of immigrants around the world.

This statement is almost ture, but I don't think all the people have learned different cultureal behaviors. There are still many people who didn't understand or maybe refuse to accept other cultures.

    2. No human is born with a built-in culture or language. Our temperaments, dispositions, and personalities, regardless of genetic propensities, are developed within sets of meanings and values that we call "culture."

I agree with this. We don't born to know any culture or languages; in fact, we learn this from the surroundings. We were born like clear paper, it the environment and people taught us what are the cultures and languages.

    3. Historical research has shown that the idea of "race" has always carried more meanings than mere physical differences; indeed, physical variations in the human species have no meaning except the social ones that humans put on them.

Yes, I agree with this statement. The physical characteristics doesn't mean anything. Race is something that relate to ones culture and stuffs like that, it's more than just the appearances.

    4. In the United States both scholars and the general public have been conditioned to viewing human races as natural and separate divisions within the human species based on visible physical differences.

No, I think it's like what we learn from the video. I beleive race is define as a group of people shares same household or comment ancestors. It's way more than just the physical characteristics.

    1. 71 percent of self-identified Hispanic adults said that you don't need to speak Spanish to be considered Latinx. At the same time, nearly 90 percent say that it's important for future generations of Latinx Americans to speak Spanish.

I think it is important for Latinx Americans to speak Spanish because the language is part of the culture.

    2. In other words: While the population is growing, a smaller percentage of us are speaking the language. In 2006, 78 percent of Latinxs spoke Spanish at home. By 2015, that number had dropped to 73 percent.

This made me think of the Asian community too. In US the number of Asian community is also increasing; however, many of the ABCs or ABKs don’t know their “native” (Chinese and Korean) languages.

    1. The men often journeyed alone, under labor contracts, and intended eventually to return to their families in China.

Sadly this is true. However, I think if they have a chance to reunion with their family in the United States they will stay here and start a new journey in this country. The main reason caused them want to return to China is the loneliness, once they are with their family they will stay for sure.

    2. In theory, the decision to become a U.S. citizen separates migrants who want only to take advantage of economic opportunity from those who are ready to acquire a new national identity.

No, it didn’t really separates migrants because people who came to this country for economic purposes will still want to become citizen. As citizens, they can get more work opportunities, and that might push them to become citizens.

    3. The people who filled the auditorium that morning in August 2014 came from 82 countries (about half with a non-Christian heritage) and represented nearly all the nationalities on the planet.

This shows that America is a big melting pot. I can still remembered when I attended the ceremony, people were from 62 different countries. It’s crazy that we can meet different races in one country and sharing one language, which is amazing.

    4. If America changes to the point that it is no longer a Christian nation and no longer protects itself from aliens who come and go,” Greenwood said in 2010, “then it won’t be America anymore.”

One of the freedom Americans have is that people are free on the religion choices. If America is no longer a Christian nation, it can still be America If all the people love this country and protect this country. That’s the most important thing for the country.

    1. The reality is we have unusually high poverty because we have unusually high penalties for all four of these risk factors.

No, it’s not that we have unusually high penalties caused unusually high poverty! It really depends on the people themselves, even if you are a high school drop out teenager, you can still find a job if you really want to work. There are many successful people who’s didn’t complete high school. So it really depends on people themselves.

    2. In a majority of rich democracies, single mothers are not more likely to be poor.

Single mothers in many countries are still consider as poor community, providing such kind of benefits didn’t really solve the problem. What they should do is to offer more jobs.

    3. Because fewer people are in single-mother families than you’d think, even large reductions in single motherhood would not substantially reduce poverty.

True! People are often think that single mother is a big community in the United States; therefore, they always linked poverty and single motherhood together. In fact, it is actually smaller than we people expected, so even if the number of single motherhood get reduced, it won’t change the property in the United States.

    4. The reality, however, is that single motherhood is not the reason we have unusually high poverty in the United States, compared with other rich democracies.

I agree with this statement. Because even if there’s no single mothers, we still have many homeless people. Those people are the major issue in the United States not the single mothers.
