      jody is really self conscious of the image he has for other ppl to see: 1. he wanted a young wife to make himself look cool 2. he controlled what janie could do based off what he thinks is suitable for a mayor's wife 3. doesn't let her do things that make him look bad 4. copies what the white people that he probably worked with did to give off the same aura 5. does certain things to gain 'points' or to look better (ex. when he overheard what janie said abt the mule and later ppl started praising him)
