    1. “Can you see us?” The old woman let go of her charge and waved her hands wildly. The tips of her fingers barely reached the top of the boy’s head. “Are we in it? What are we?”

more evidence that he is in a virtual reality video game. The woman is asking if the boy can see her.

    2. He touched the node on his finger to the node at his temple, raising the volume.

Seems like his brain is his virtual world and he can decide whether or not to turn it off. For example, when he's at the beach and then all of a sudden in another video game type world.

    1. I joined them, flew among them, they did not recognize me as something apart from them, and I was happy, so happy, because for the first time in years, and forevermore, I had not killed, and never would

Jeff rose up into heaven? The birds recognized him as the same because all humanity should be given a chance. We learn that Jeff understands now how to empathize and realize his actions hurt others. For the first time he realizes not to kill and he would never do it because he is willing to sacrifice himself for someone he loves.

    2. My only regret was Mom. I hoped someday, in some better place, I’d get a chance to explain it to her, and maybe she’d be proud of me, one last time, after all these years.

Jeff's only regret was his mom because he let her down by all the bad things he did that sent him to jail. He wishes to meet her again, and when he does he wants her to be proud of him. That he chose to spare her life and die himself in the power of love.

    1. Aunt Jennifer’s tigers prance across a screen, Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.

these two lines shows imagery to the reader. It paints your eyes an orange and black color. You imagine this tiger walking through green. (grass, a field, etc).

    2. chivalric certainty.

maybe this line suggests that she is no longer afraid of men? and that she is brave now.

Or is it that she sees the tigers as chivalric and wishes she could be that way too?

Not sure if the Tigers represent her now or if she is comparing herself to a brave animal and wishes to be more like them?

    3. tigers

Tigers in this poem could symbolize bravery, boldness and dominance. Aunt Jennifer shows us that the tiger symbolizes these characteristics and they stand tall, even after all the pain she has experienced.

    4. Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.

I believe what this line is trying to say is that her relationship is painful and it is dragging her down in her life. This line shows pain towards the reader.

    5. Aunt Jennifer’s finger fluttering through her wool Find even the ivory needle hard to pull. The massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand.

Maybe the wool keeps getting stuck on her ring and it reminds her of the hardships with her husband/man. Also could there be a reference to domestic violence here? 'The ring on her finger' could suggest that her relationship problems consumed her and dominated her (as if "she was mastered by" it). Aunt Jennifer seemed like she can't escape the situation.

    1. How public – like a Frog –

This poem uses a lot of enjambed lines. This line is also a simile. To be like a frog could mean carefree and wild. "How public" directly means what it says, saying a frog is public or out in the open outdoors. A nobody might feel trapped, depressed, sad, lost.
