    1. The jury ruled that Erdely acted with actual malice when she published two statements about Eramo, the first being that Eramo discouraged Jackie from reporting her allegations and a reference to Eramo’s “nonreaction” when Jackie first told Eramo about other allegations of gang rape at a fraternity.

Erdely even threw Eramo under the bus, claiming she was properly supportive. False accusations make it so everyone close to you can no longer believe you.

    2. “This young woman was very good at telling this story,” Sexton said. “Dean Eramo believed her . . . Yet we are the ones being tried, in a sense, for having believed her.”

To support the oppositions view of how believing someone, no matter how close you are, could be detrimental to you.

    3. An investigation by The Washington Post showed that aspects of Jackie’s account were not true, including that no one in the fraternity matched the name or description she gave for the person who allegedly was the ringleader of her assault. A person she had described to friends at the time as her assailant was complete fiction, according to Eramo’s attorneys, and The Post found that a photo she shared of her alleged attacker was actually of someone she knew from high school and who attended a different school out of state.

In the article that was posted in a Rolling Stones magazine a few years back, a woman had accused a group of men in a fraternity of a Gang Rape. Her description and image of the boy and the names she had mentioned in no way matched any of the men in the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Even the photo she had shared was one of a boy from her high school. When they went to do research on the boy they found that he went to another college out of state. This completely debunked Elderly's, the alleged survivor, story.

    4. Originally hailed as a brave triumph of reporting for its raw accounts of rape and attempts at bringing accountability to a storied public university, the article led to protests of the U-Va. administration, vandalism of a campus fraternity and outrage among activists trying to prevent sexual assault.

False accusations not only harm you but everyone around you and involved. It can deeply effect people who are beyond innocent.

    5. But within days of the article’s publication, key elements of the account fell apart under scrutiny, including the narrative’s shocking allegation of a fraternity gang rape

Good for oppositions view. Shows that VERY RARELY a person will falsely accuse another of assault.

    1. HHS describes it either as “assault-sexual” or “unwanted sexual contact.”

Why do they phrase it in two different ways? They are the same thing either way.

    2. There can be valid reasons for using different terminology in these data collection initiatives, as each targets different populations, uses different methodologies and serves different purposes.

Look into more of the methods used to collect data for a better look at the oppositions view.

    3. Better data at the federal level will not solve the problem of sexual assault, nor will improving federal reporting requirements produce perfect statistics. Most sexual assaults go unreported, and police departments and college campuses can deliberately manipulate statistics or discourage sexual assault reporting, further limiting the public’s understanding of the problem. However, by improving how federal agencies collect and report data about sexual assault, policymakers can finally make smarter decisions about how to combat it.

Even with a better system for collection of data our government still won't be able to completely understand the situation due to other factors. These factors could range anywhere from just being unreported, to police departments unethically manipulating the data, or even college campuses that can discourage the students to report and speak up. However, with a better way to collect data government officials will be able to better their understanding and more educated decisions on how to fight the issue at hand. They will be able to make it so in courts we don't immediately accuse the survivor, that we will listen and see how we can find justice for what has happened.

    4. The wide variation in reporting can make research about sexual violence unnecessarily difficult, as comparisons between different groups are all but impossible when methodologies differ so greatly, and the lack of clarity about what these different statistics really mean provides fodder for toxic arguments that dismiss the severity of the problem of sexual assault and imply that false reporting of rape is commonplace (it is not).

Different types of reporting for sexual assault lead to misunderstandings between people. The lack of proper collection of statistics makes it so many dismiss the issue or accuse the survivor of falsely reporting an assault.

    5. After reviewing 10 different data collection efforts, GAO found that federal agencies use 23 different terms to describe an incident of sexual violence.

This would be good when I present how we should fix the problem. One way for all companies would be easier for us to understand.

    1. My daughter will be brought up to understand her true value. That’s a promise. As for all the little girls to be born around the world, the creation of these ads is an effort to show how imagination can change the conversation around their lives.

This piece connects with the authors opening by talking about her daughter again. At the beginning of her article she talks about her doctors appointment and being told that she is going to have a little girl. The author then follows up with statistics on why most would rather have a boy. I think that since she wrapped back around to her own personal experience and thoughts that it makes it resonate more with the reader. She targets the audience with an emotional connection, or pathos, gets all of her points out. Discusses how society makes girls out to the lesser gender and then comes back in with why this topic is important to her. So, I think that this is an effective strategy.
