    1. but unfortunately all the massacres of the Jews in the Middle Ages did notsuffice to make that period more peaceful and secure for their Christian fellows.

What is he getting at? Is he implying that it should have sufficed coverage for other religions?

    2. The time comes when eachone of us has to give up as illusions the expectations which, in his youth, he pinned upon his fellow-men,and when he may learn how much difficulty and pain has been added to his life by their ill-will.

However, some people will die with the illusions because they will never be forced to face reality.

    3. Man's observation of the great astronomicalregularities not only furnished him with a model for introducing order into his life, but gave him the firstpoints of departure for doing so.

In life many things are learned from observation. We are not like animals with instincts, we must see and mimic to survive!

    4. We shall not look for a formula in which to express that nature in afew words, until we have learned something by examining it

I think what he is saying is that every problem does not have a quick solution. Some things need to be analyzed more before the answer could be found.

    1. I dont think that people avoid using the word oppression because they are not aware of the meaning, I think people avoid using the word in fear of calling out things for what they are. The word meaning has changed overtime but the overall connotation has not.

    1. if presented with the opportunity tobuild monuments that told our story or to curate these particular spaces... wouldthese monuments be what we want the world to see?

I think the monuments are important but i feel like black people are the only ones with so many traumatizing monuments. Maybe we could put up more inspiring and uplifting monuments.

    2. We radiate beauty and grace in our food, in our music, in our architecture, in ourjoy of life, in our celebration of death; in everything that we do.

I love how the culture of all the people who came to New Orleans still lingers and beams through everything about New Orleans.

    3. Do these monuments help her see a future with limitless potential?

One thing i can say about New Orleans is that they have a lot of tours, so you get to know more about the story than just looking at the monument!

    4. I want to try to gently peel from your hands the grip on a false narrative of ourhistory that I think weakens us and make straight a wrong turn we made manyyears ago so we can more closely connect with integrity

I notice that people come to many issues very gently and they don't need to be peeled off like band aids but like wax. Slowly peeling wounds allows for too much "bleeding"!

    1. The largest suburb today is Metairie, an unincorporated subdivision of Jefferson Parish that borders New Orleans to the west

Driving through metairie and New Orleans it looks like two different places.

    2. The effort was a success and the disease was stopped before reaching epidemic proportions. President Theodore Roosevelt visited the city to demonstrate the safety of New Orleans. It has had no cases of Yellow Fever since.

This is a direct contradiction to New Orleans reaction to covid. It was one of the worst covid infested places in the u.s.

    3. The political and commercial importance of New Orleans, as well as its strategic position,

The so-called strategic position of New Orleans back then has sure backfired in the long run.

    4. The importance of New Orleans as a commercial center was reinforced when the United States Federal Government established a branch of the United States Mint there in 1838, along with two other Southern branch mints at Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dahlonega, Georgia. Although there was an existing coin shortage, the situation became much worse because in 1836 President Andrew Jackson had issued an executive order, called a specie circular, which demanded that all land transactions in the United States be conducted in cash,

Crazy thing is there is once again a coin shortage mixed with inflation. What a time to be alive and grown.

    5. Much of the colonial population in early days was of the wildest and, in part, of the most undesirable character: deported galley slaves, trappers, gold-hunters

The author mentions that the people there were undesirable slaves as if they asked to be there.

    6. With its rich and unique cultural and architectural heritage, New Orleans remains a major destination for live music, tourism, conventions, and sporting events and annual Mardi Gras celebrations. After the significant destruction and loss of life resulting from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the city would bounce back and rebuild in the ensuing years.

You would think the government would have tried harder in the rehabilitation of New Orleans being that it is a major tour site.

    1. The slaves were collectively valued at half a billion dollars.

This is still beyond believable to me. Humans were seen as objects. I'll never get used to the narrative

    2. New Orleans' economy had always been based more on trade and financial services than on manufacturing, but the city's relatively small manufacturing sector also shrank after World War II

This may be one of the rising issues in New Orleans today. Many people are without a job because the city is so focused on pleasing tourist that they forget the very people that live in the city are those who keep the culture vibrant.

    3. In the city of New Orleans an inspiring mixture of foreign influences created a melting pot of culture that is still celebrated today.

This is the obvious reason why many people visit New Orleans every year to see and experience the culture brought there by slaves and immigrants.
