But who controls articulation?
I've never thought of it in this way.
But who controls articulation?
I've never thought of it in this way.
I switch it up just because I can
I can relate to this as well.
And my answer is tainted with a connotationof urbanized suggestionThere’s no misdirected intention
Although she knows that she can answer in any way, she still chooses to use the "proper" English.
Page 30, being a First Generation Student puts a lot of pressure. I can relate to this so much because all my family members overwhelm me with advice and stories. Sometimes it feels like if you fail you are going to be laughed at by your family or they won't be happy.
Page 30 choosing a major is really hard because sometimes some people don't know what they want to do in their life. I was lucky enough to know what I want to do in life and researched on what I had to do in order to achieve it.
Page 30 Paragraph 1, having a job and going to school can get very difficult especially when you are tying to figure out your new routine.
Page 28 Paragraph 8, learning how to make a different routine that works best for you is complicated. It takes a lot of trial and error and that is what I am currently going through.
Page 28 Paragraph 2, it is important to be able to have but always know how to balance it and which priorities come first. I had some classmates in high school who said that the only reason they want to go to college was for the parties and I just think that's a waste of time and money.
Page 27 Paragraph 3, I can relate to this a lot because I used to make up excuses for my failures and instead of focusing on myself I was focusing on other people.
Spanglish, comes most naturally to me. I may switch back and forth from English to Spanish in the same sentence or in the same word.
It is a super common thing for young Latinx people to do.
Even our own people, other Spanish speakers nos quieren poner candados en la boca. They would hold us back with their bag of reglas de academia.
Yes, we are taught to be professional and to never go against adults or elders. This is mainly taught to Latina women.
OVERCOMING THE TRADITION OF SILENCE
I have realized that I have always gotten in trouble for opening my mouth. Growing up I was told to just obey and that it was bad not doing so. I've learned that I have a choice to speak my mind and that I can't just keep my mouth shut when I feel something is wrong or unfair.
I've never heard them applied to men.
This sentence is all true. Latinx women have more rules on them than men. Personally, being the middle child with two brothers I have witnessed the double standards and feel as if I don't have freedom to do my own thing. An example can be having a boyfriend/girlfriend. My brother currently has a girlfriend but if I mention that I want to hang out with a guy friend they question me and tell me that I can't have a boyfriend.
"If you want to be American, speak 'American.' If you don't like it, go back to Mexico where you belong."
This always makes me angry because 1. America stole our land and 2. American isn't even a language.
identity
I believe that my language is connected to my identity.
which people can be made to feel ashamed of their own tongues.
Whenever I'm with my mom she always tells me to not talk loudly because she doesn't want people looking at us while we speak Spanish.
Page 261, I like how Malcom X was interested in learning about his own culture.
Page 262, paragraph 1, I remember that I was also terrified and shocked when I was just learning about slavery.
Page 265, paragraph 3, I can agree that reading can open up your minds and enhance your vocabulary.
I have learned so much by reading this. Especially about the Opium War.
Page 260 last paragraph, History is definitely "whitened" because in school we are taught that America is so great and that we are the best. When in reality there are so many things wrong with America.
Pages 258-259, It is so cool that Malcom X was able to learn how to read by himself in prison.
LANGUAGEBARRIERS
A common language barrier are the accents and pronunciation.
I've often used the samekind of English with him, and sometimes he evenuses it with me. It has become our language of inti-macy, a different sort of English that relates tofamily talk, the language I grew up with.
This reminds me of how me and my friends have our own spanglish language and sometimes I use is with my non spanish speaking friends and I would have to repeat myself in English.
ESSAYMother Tongue
My mother tongue and my families mother is speaking spanish.
I later decided I should envision a reader for thestories I would write. And the reader I decided onwas my mother,
Amy loves her mother deeply
When I was a teenager, sheused to have me call people on the phone andpretend I was she.
This is super relatable. I had to answer phone calls, text messages, fill out documents pretending to be my mom and till this day I have to help her do that.
Yet some of my friends tell methey understand fifty percent of whatmy mother says. Some say theyunderstand eighty to ninety percent. Some say they understand none of it,as if she were speaking pure Chinese,But to me, my mother's English isperfectly clear, perfectly natural. It'smy mother tongue. Her languag
To me my dad's English is perfectly understandable but when he was speaking to one of my friends she said she wasn't able to understand him very well and that confused me because I understood everything he said.
again found myself conscious of theEnglish I was using, the English 1 do use with her
I have also caught myself doing this. If I'm with my friends I use "informal" english but when Im with teachers or people I haven't met I use "proper" english. I have to think before I talk.
Before reading the narratives above, why do you think individual experience is important? How can we start to connect experiences in academic settings?
Individual experience is important because it helps us grow as a person and learn from our mistakes. Through our experiences, we start connecting it to videos we watch, books we read and people we meet.
What do you believe your learning style is? If you were to place yourself on the Zone of Appropriate Challenge and Growth, where has the majority of your education taken place as a learner?
The way I learn is actively doing what Im told. For example at work, I was told to memorize the menu in order to know the ingredients but I told them it would be difficult for me so its better if I do the sandwiches or salads by hand in order to memorize it properly. Another example is my biology class, every single day we had an activity to do and while doing the activity we were learning.
The reason is simple: because a single test cannot test everybody’s abilities,
I completely agree. Standardized tests just create unwanted stress and anxiety.
Learning must be challenging, but everybody has their own level of challenge.
I remember how chemistry was super challenging for me but because of that I practiced and asked for help to the point where I was able to do the work by myself.
students will be motivated to learn based on genuine curiosity, problem solving, and a curriculum that revolves around their lives.
This is completely true. If something doesn't get my attention I will not take interest into learning, I will just need to do the assignments given to us in order to not get a bad grade.
why do you think your experience has been like that? What were pros and cons? What ideas from this chapter might have improved your experience?
My experience was definitely average although there were a few teachers who knew how to actively engage with the class. I have always struggled with math mainly because most of my math teachers only gave us worksheets and expected us to do it by ourselves. In 8th grade my class had a new math teacher and he was actively working with me because I was not where I was supposed to be and he helped me be ready for high school math. In my four years of high school I only had 3 teachers who actually cared about the student and helped every single student succeed.
of active learning and what makes learning engaging, fun, and ultimately the most rewarding for both you, the students, and us, the teachers.
Active learning is super helpful and fun. So far in this class I feel super engaged which wants me to learn more.
This is called constructivist learning, where the knowledge in the classroom is constructed from below (which requires that students are collaborating with teachers)—as opposed to knowledge or information delivered from the top (where teachers deliver a lecture).
I feel like when both the students and teacher work together it creates a better learning environment and a safe space.
What is learning, and how do we learn best?
This question can be interpreted in many ways but it is super important.
Engagement in Active Learning: Introduce how this textbook and classroom activities will engage students in active learning as they read, to engage students with interactive experiences during the process of learning and reading.Openness, Flexibility: Prepare your mindset to be flexible and open to new reading and writing situations in college; reinforce the growth mindset model and prepare students with strategies to control their reading and writing growthResponsibility, Metacognition: To reflect on your own learning styles and build strategies for reading and writing based on your individual learning process.
These three learning objectives are super important because each student learns in a different way and I like the fact that it doesn't exclude anyones progress.
t's not easy to know what is true for you or me at twenty-two, my age. But I guess I'm what I feel and see and hear, Harlem, I hear you:hear you, hear me--we two--you, me, talk on this page.(I hear New York, too.) Me--who?
When people ask me "can you describe yourself?" I pause for a moment because It is hard for me to answer the question because I am still trying to figure out who I am.
I am the only colored student in my class.
I definitely knows how this feels and it is really challenging.
I wonder if it's that simple?
I always ask myself this question when I am told to write a page.
. Own your voice and be proud of yourlabor.
This is telling the students to not feel discouraged to have their own opinion and to stand their ground.
No matter who youare or what your relationship with the English language is, the labor-based contract takes thepressure out of learning by removing any animosity, guesswork, or gaming from the gradingprocess.
This shows that you care more about the effort each student puts in the class.
In these paragraphs I can predict that your values as a teacher is not only to teach the students the standard curriculum but also include our own personal meaning into the assignments.
