    1. They are hunters by profession and they would have the whole range of the forests for themselves and their cattle.

It seems almost like living in a town, I couldn't imagine living in a forest full of trees, I think I would get lost.

    1. One of our tribes was forced to wander far beyond Quebec, others dispersed in small bodies and sought places of refuge where they could. Some came to Pennsylvania, others went far to the westward and mingled with other tribes.

There could have been family members separated and never seen each other again.

    2. They at first asked only for a little land on which to raise bread for themselves and their families and pasture for their cattle, which we freely gave them. They soon wanted more, which we also gave them. They saw the game in the woods which the Great Spirit had given us for our subsistence and they wanted that too.

This is really disappointing, it just shows you may not receive kindness in exchange of kindness.

    3. Soon your mighty forest trees under the shade of whose wide spreading branches you have played in infancy, sported in boyhood, and now rest your wearied limbs after the fatigue of the chase will be cut down to fence in the land which the white intruders dare to call their own

This is very interesting to read, it's very poetic.

    1. Peace, civilization, and the cheerful sound of the human voice have taken the place of the frightful savage wilderness, of the nightly howling of the wolf, and the mid-day terrors of the Indian scalping knife.

This is terrible, fear of being scalped is definitely now one of my phobias.

    1. It has been urged that a public debt greater than we can possibly pay before other causes of adding new debt to it will occur

That is a lot of debt to be in for anyone.

    1. where there is a settlement of thirty families about thirty miles from its mouth.

Thirty families sounds like a lot but if you think about it thirty families is less than a town typically.

    1. This state also emitted a large sum in bills of credit which served to pay the interest of the public debt. But the currency depreciated, as in other states.

Its good that the public debt was being paid.

    1. While the Federalist architects of the Constitution feared a pure democracy and preferred to limit political power to elite merchants, bankers, and plantation owners, Jefferson was more optimistic that the common American farmer could be trusted to make good decisions.

American farmers should've been trusted to make good decisions.

    2. the United States would have to repay all outstanding debts owed to France, lend France 32 million guilders (Dutch currency), and pay a £50,000 bribe.

That's a lot of money back then compared to now it would be almost effortless.

    3. . The Directory was continually at war with coalitions of enemies including the Ottoman Empire, Austria, Prussia, and the Kingdom of Naples

Constantly being at war is unimaginable to me, constant fighting all the time.

    1. The Daughters’ non-importation movement broadened the protest against the Stamp Act and gave women a new, active role in the political dissent of the time.

I think this is very interesting because its a very bold movement considering it were women to be apart of it.

    2. To make matters worse, Prime Minister Grenville introduced the Stamp Act in early 1765. Under this act, anyone who used or purchased anything printed on paper had to buy a revenue stamp for it

I don't get why you have to buy a stamp to purchase printed paper.

    3. But the decision of the Indians to defend their homeland from invaders is not equal to the attitude of the British, who regarded native peoples as a lesser race that must be moved out of the way of progress.

This interests me because it really shows how bad the indians were really being treated.

    4. The British army imposed harsh discipline on its soldiers, who were drawn from the poorer classes, to ensure they did not step out of line during engagements.

This really draws my attention, it just shows how people were treated based on the class.

    1. Pocahontas helped end the war in 1614 when she married John Rolfe (not Captain John Smith) and promoters of colonization publicized her story as an example of the good work of converting the uncivilized Powhatan to Christianity.

Starting a war and ending it with just a marriage is just weird to think about.

    1. The Indians tolerated the newcomers because their numbers were modest and because the French supplied them with firearms for their ongoing wars with the Iroquois, who had received weapons from their Dutch trading partners

Normally indigenous are quick to defend from any newcomers.

    2. The Spanish image of an ideal colonial society included natives eager to work and embrace Christianity, mountains of gold and silver, and a social order where everyone knew their place. Patriarchy and social hierarchy shaped the Spanish colonial world

Its so interesting to learn about different cultures.

    1. When I saw them making a move to fire at us, I rested my musket against my cheek and aimed directly at one of the three chiefs. With the same shot two fell to the ground, and one of their men was so wounded that he died some time after.

Just so sad that everything is still involving violence.

    2. We set out the next day, continuing our course in the river as far as the entrance of the lake. There are many pretty islands here, low and containing very fine woods and meadows with abundance of fowl and such animals of the chase as stags, fallow-deer, fawns, roe-bucks, bears, and others which go from the mainland to these islands.

Its interesting how now almost everywhere you go there's a city, but back then all you would see is forests and animals with pretty meadows.

    1. Yet we found no towns nor many of their houses, although we saw many Indians which are tall big boned men, all naked saving they cover their privy parts with a black-hued skin, much like a Blacksmith’s apron, tied about their middle and between their legs behind.

I wonder why they wouldn't of built any towns if there were plenty of stones around to make houses.

    1. a bright tin dish most pleased him which he presently took up and clapt it before his breast. And after made a hole in the brim thereof and hung it about his neck, making signs that it would defend him against his enemies’ arrows.

It is so cool how armor has changed going from simple tin discs into being completely covered in medal to protect from enemies.

    1. The houses have flat roofs and walls of stone and mud,

I could never imagine living in a stone and concrete house. Its so interesting seeing and reading about evolution.

    1. And in that space our General mustered and trained his men on land in warlike manner, to make them fit for all occasions.

Its almost a little sad that everything has to be made in a warlike manner. Of course defending is very important, but sometimes training in warlike manners can cause more confliction.

    1. but they could not tell if they were human beings or animals; and it seemed to them that there were fields where they thought might also be villages, and they saw a forest whose foliage looked beautiful.

Its interesting to read about new findings of villages and new people, potentially finding new resources that could help with medicines.
