    1. 70,000 students that attend the two large universities in the county,

      Personal connection: I was one of those 70,000 students. I completed my undergrad in Utah County and did take advantage of the regions outdoor opportunities! It was fun to read an article that was so close to my heart!

      In our reading, Foss talks about how disaster created short term and long term changes in organizations. How could a job, like search and rescue, were disaster and unexpected happen seemingly every day, impact the structure of an organization?

Although their system of sponsors is not necessarily a typical hiring system, what do you think about the way the Jeep Patrol chooses to recruit and bring in new people? Do they make any of the common attributions mistakes typically made in hiring?

      The communication structure of the Jeep Patrol seems like it could use some improvement. If you were the manger and leader of this organization at the time, how would you improve communication and processes? What managerial role would you chose to emphasize and focus on first?

      Galbraith speaks to the causes of uncertainty and how to decrease uncertainty in an organization. He says that uncertainty is a result of diversity of goals, level of goal performance and divisions of labor. What are some ways the Jeep Patrol could have decreased the uncertainty in their organization according the Galbraith?

    9. he Utah County Sheriff’s Office Jeep Patrol was a volunteer, 4-wheel drive, members-onlyclub. It was established 50+ years ago and worked in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office inemergency response situations.

      We learned about the dimensions of structure from Rainey this week. What are some of the dimensions of structure of the Jeep Patrol? How did these dimensions of structure impact the work and functions of the Patrol?

They could only hope to find thewoman and help her to safety without any unexpected incident, such as a sudden shift inweather or the woman being severely injured, or the four of them may not have been able tohandle the call out successfully. After several hours, near 2 o’clock in the morning, they foundher huddled underneath the hood of her snowmobile.

      I am curious to know if anyone has had an experience with search and rescue? Has anyone ever been or is currently involved in a search and rescue team? Does anyone have a story where they were searched and rescued themselves? I think search and rescue stories can be very inspiring and I am interested if anyone has personal experience with a search and rescue team?

      In the chapters we read this week, Rainey talks about different factors that impact the structure and function of an organization, one of which being the strategic choices of an organization. The strategy is based on the goals and mission of an organization. How do you think the goals and mission of the Jeep Patrol impacted its structure? Did it also impact its success?

Theywere frustrated that they were putting in hours of training, yet the Jeep Patrol was gettingcalled on technical rescues that they obviously didn’t have the skills to handle. They wereappalled by Jeep Patrol members climbing in cowboy boots and working in rainstorms in plasticponchos.       Mintzberg says that structure is "the sum total of the ways in which it divides its labor district tasks and achieves coordination among them". Which of Mintzberg's organizational types does the Mountain Rescue Team represent? Is it a different type than what the Jeep Patrol represents?

    13. 9 miles to the summit of the mountain

      I have personally hiked the Mount Timpanogos trail to the summit, and it is a hard hike. While I was hiking there I summited at sunset and descended in the dark, and we ran into a search and rescue team carrying someone down the mountain on a stretcher. I can attest that there are a lot of backcountry rescue calls that come from this popular trail every week from unprepared hikers.

      I am curious if anyone else has had experiences in organizations that they have been involved with, where they saw an improvement in processes when there was an improvement in communication? What role does a manager play in communicating, and facilitating communication in an organization?

      This just reminds me of the exercise we did this week. Examples of bad or good press influencing those in public office and public policy can be found everywhere. It made me ponder, what are the other possible things that influence public policy? If not the interest of the public what else could cause that much drive for change?
