In other words, it is only when applicants are affiliated with a significant donor or "major money" that their candidacy is strongly considered and too often accepted below standard.
I understand that the reading is several years old, but I find it shocking that prestigious schools such as Harvard takes money into account, rather than the academic success in proportion to their background. Minorities breaking into Harvard and being given the opportunity to create things would is a power Harvard has, and is only beneficial to them to.

Borrow money if you have to from your parents" is indicative of his and many peo-ple's inability to understand poverty or any class status other than their own.
This reminds me of a joke on the former president, where he "got a small loan of one million dollars." While it is amazing what Jimmy John and Donald Trump was able to build up from their starting point, you truly have to recognize that a vast majority of people can't borrow money like that. Those who can benefit the most from borrowing money to go to school or start a business can't afford it.

I personally have experienced this myself. In second grade, my elementary teacher used to pair students up for a math activity based off of their academic prowess. While this made competition even, it ensure that the smart students were getting smarter, while those that were behind didn't improve as much.

Any serious discussion about the inception of poverty in this country m~st begin by recognizing that class is highly racialized (even globally), and vice versa.
I wonder what is required to break this radicalized form of class and poverty. I believe there are success stories, but that should be the norm, rather than the exception. Education is most likely the place to look and start.

What scores of students-well-meaning educators, all-fail to realize is that public education does not serve its intended function as the great equal-izer. Quite contrarily, schools actually structure inequality (gasp!) in insidiously subtle ways.
As the text reads, I don't believe any educators, or even politicians, intend to structure inequality through its school system. Given the huge wave of students for teachers to teach, there is a need to structure education rather than personalize it for each student. This harms students, and is part of what the author might mean when they say schools structure inequality in insidiously subtle ways.

Despite the fact that participation in school elections is very low and information on which to base a vote is often scarce, Americans will not surrender local control without a fight.
I can understand the benefits of hosting school elections locally, promoting a system catered towards their local community, but without the active participation of citizens, it comes pointless and even harmful. As I said in a previous comment, not as many voters are interested because it is a problem that doesn't directly impact them.

Where it has been tried, educating poor children with students who are more privi-leged, or educating them like students who are more privileged, has improved their performance and long-term chance of success
I believe a part of it is more so treating the kids smarter, rather than below their grade level. I can see a teacher feeling like their students are less mature than they really are, resulting in academics not being taken as seriously on both sides.

Because education is so im-portant to the way the American dream works, people care about it intensely and can strongly disagree about definitions, methods, and priorities.
I agree that education is extremely important to the American Dream and ensuring that everyone has an opportunity, but important changes are simply not happening. All of the voters have an out of date perception on what is being taught in school, and what changes simply won't affect directly them. Yes, their kids are affected, but politicians need to entice voters with more direct appeal such as lower groceries cost.

It holds each person responsible for achieving his or her own dreams, while generating shared values and behaviors needed to persuade Americans that they have a real chance to achieve them.
This American Dream is something that I strongly believe is a good vision to have, and is something the United States should be fighting to uphold. So many people are in a spot where it feels impossible, and many have given up on it despite working so hard. This can be a result of financial struggles, creating a cycle of never ending poverty. I can't wait to see in this class what we can do to fix this.
