    1. The push and pull between different points of view actually strengthens democracy.

This supports the main argument. Engaging in civil dialogue (debating) has more positive outcomes than negative outcomes.

    2. Our polarized nation has learned the hard way what happens when leaders and citizens don’t nurture those essentials.

This supports the main argument. The author included this in their argument by showing the cons of not accepting their main idea.

    3. From the White House to statehouses to city hall, leaders can ensure Americans enjoy a constructive debate over the future of their nation, states, and communities by embracing the importance of diverse viewpoints.

This sentence supports the main argument. Leaders are essentially our role models. We vote them in, trusting them enough to help our community, state, country, etc. If they fail to have mature and educational arguments, they have also failed us. If they can learn from each other and share their different perspectives, it would shed more of a positive light on debating. Communities will then have more open conversations about these situations without them ending in an argument.

    4. Creating respectful debates requires leaders, as well as Americans in their communities, to be intentional about expanding civil dialogue, community engagement and civic renewal.

This is the author's main argument. I have annotated their supporting details.

    5. As citizens, we need not think that the conflict between ideas and ideologies is bad.

This sentence supports the main argument. We are often pinned against one another when we have different political views. If leaders respect and accept their opponent's ideas, we may also reciprocate that same respect to fellow community members and leaders.

    6. The case for pluralism needs to come from our leaders because they have platforms to “show” how we can engage with each other despite our differences.

This sentence is a supporting detail for the main argument. Our leaders must expand on their civic engagement because they have a much larger platform than regular citizens. If we see them being involved in stuff like this, we are more likely to follow in their footsteps and do the same thing. Thus, resulting in both leaders and citizens being more active in their community.
