to commence the higher branches of education, of which the legislature require the development: those for example which are to form the statesmen, legislators & judges, on whom public prosperity, & individual happiness are so much to depend.
Here the document states that one of the objectives of the university is to provide higher education to the people meant to become statesmen, legislators, and judges. I find this interesting for two reasons. The first is that today higher education is somewhat assumed to be a staple for anyone who wants to be successful in making an large income not just those who are meant to be statesmen, legislators, and judges. Today higher education is much more common and much more necessary. The second reason I find this interesting is that the document says that "public prosperity and individual happiness" is dependent on the people receiving this higher education. I have trouble agreeing and disagreeing with this statement. I would agree that the statesmen, legislators, and judges have a huge impact on public prosperity which in turn can have an impact on individual happiness, however, I think many would disagree that their happiness is dependent of statesmen, legislators, and judges. - Jo Herget

General Grammar explains the construction of Language
It is fascinating to analyze how the classes have changed and stayed the same over time. For example this class "General Grammar" could be referring to the type of grammar that today we learn in middle school rather than in college. This seems likely considering the explanation says that it "explains the constructs of language." However, this class could mean "General Grammar" as the equivalent to our writing requirements. - Jo Herget

Three places were proposed, to wit Lexington in the County of Rockbridge, Staunton in the County of Augusta, and the Central college in the County of Albemarle:
I find it interesting to look into the three locations proposed for The University of Virginia. Lexington, Staunton, and Charlottesville were the three locations proposed with the criteria in consideration being "healthiness of the site", "fertility of the neighboring county", and "centrality to the white population of the whole state." It is the last criteria that sticks out to me. I find it shocking that the accessibility to whites was such a strong factor in picking the location of the University. It is incredibly unsettling that the grounds I walk everyday were picked specifically for the white race. On another note I find it interesting that Lexington Virginia is now home to its own university.
