They might not be taught strategies that help them to make learning their own through self-regulation and reflection.
From a very young age I noticed how many lesson plans were designed to fit a very specific criteria, only measured by our teachers and graded based on how well we could memorize certain things. It became apparent that to get a good grade you had to be good at doing what was expected of you but not actually excelling in the subject you were getting graded on. You only had to make the teacher happy. I often felt that I wasnt understanding anything truly, only practicing how to tailor my words to what the teachers wanted to hear. I think if we were taught from a young age how to utilize metacognitive techniques we would be better at learning through resources on our own and wouldnt rely on ultra specific instuctions.
