I thought this was a very interesting article with a unique perspective on the views of both Americans and Vietnamese-Americans. I find the impact that the Vietnam war on language very interesting.

My classmate had been irradiated by the images he — and I, and all my eventual Asian-American classmates in high school — saw.
Very interesting comment on the ways we are affected from media and imagery.

So what was it that the country wanted?
For Trump supporters, a thriving economy, a crackdown on undocumented immigrants, better financial relations with our allies, increased freedoms, etc. The issue isn't that Trump supporters like his rhetoric, it is that they like his politics.

The media is not using their strength, their franchise, to elevate and illuminate the conversation. They’re just getting you all jazzed up about the game.”
This statement is not representative of how the news should act or work in any way shape or form. The fact that it does is disheartening to say the least.
-
that gun enthusiasts could rid themselves of a Clinton presidency by assassinating her.
This is true for any president. They make the idea sound abstract and outrageous but should a leader oppress their people, it is the right of their people to fight back. The idea is to be able to stop someone like Hitler or Stalin for the safety of the Nation, not to kill someone just because of a disagreement.

We’ll have evidence aplenty to demonstrate that he’s ineffective and incompetent
I strongly disagree. Trump voters got exactly what they asked for and more. Pres. Trump's personal life is messy to say the least but to say that his is an incompetent president is simply jumping to conclusions. Democrats will disagree with him but his base got more than they expected.
-
Regardless, he won’t get any pass along those lines in 2020.
I think the author underestimates both Pres. Trump and the voters. The amount of negative news is similar to before the election. The major difference for 2020 is that Trump has a proven track record as good president. I say good when looking at foreign policy, economics, and unemployment. Many of the things he promised focus the in 2016 election.

I’m not certain that more firepower would have made a difference.
More firepower? I still do not see how it is the job of the media to influence people's voting decisions. They should never have to worry about more or less firepower when their job is to report events fairly and clearly.
-
The considerable muck in Clinton’s background never did, and never could, match the mountain of muck in Trump’s.
It should be considered here what has been proven and what is speculation. Innocent until proven guilty really changes people's view of accusations.
-
If we were going to pile on Trump, we had to pile on Clinton — or, rather, keep piling on her.
This logic seems very flawed. Why do they need to make the news disproportionate to importance of events. Also, why do they need to make it negative? The job of the news is to cover facts and events that influence us, and to do so with as little bias as possible. I feel like the authors entire journalism career is an opinion piece.
-
He doesn’t hate the media, not at all. He uses us.
This is another claim by the author that isn't even backed up with anecdotal information, let alone statistical.
-
And even if it’s a ghastly spectacle and presented that way, it still lets him control the narrative.
I think it is interesting how the author phrases this to sound as if it is the media v. Trump. The news should report facts, if it agrees with Pres. Trump or not. I don't think there should be a war on controlling the narrative, the news should focus on being more objective to avoid this. Of course it is partly the presidents fault for attacking investigative journalists who are doing their job correctly.

Trump tortures us. Deliberately, yes,
I feel like the author skips over this point. He claims that President Trump deliberately tortures us. It is a bold claim with no evidence. People will always dislike the sitting president but to say he deliberately tortures us calls for more evidence in my opinion.
