an immediate impact on humans
okay but who determines this? who is to say what we prioritize as 'immediate'?

patial data
bc we like visuals!
institutional anchoring, their internal structure,
implicit biases playing a role in how we construct data, regardless of scientific method
scientific but also a cultural venture defined by the tension between the attempt to create a total knowledge base and the awareness that this task is not likely ever to reach its goal.
dialetical approach where synthesis comes from tension/conflict btwn thesis and antithesis
global biodiversity databases by assembling infor-mation from tens of thousands of sources and formats is arduous, time-consuming, labor-irttensive, and expensive.
and yet we can formulate other databases (such as how we spend our time on IG) so easily!
combin-ing narrative and catalog
I believe that it is the combination of indexes and symbols that perpetuate meaning!
global panorama of loss and disaster.
sounds familiar...
serial biological disappearance
rather than singularity or conceiving of oneself as an individual?!
elegiac
elegiac - relating to or characteristic of an elegy
elegy - a song or poem expressing sorrow or lamentation especially for one who is dead.
I hope the resultant account will be accessible to readers with no background in economics or in the financial markets , yet not too tediously simplistic for those with such backgrounds
good attempt, I was strugglin'
early independent
nearly**
Surely such assumptions are hopeless idealizations, markedly at odds with the empirical realities of markets?
I love how this sentence starts with "surely" and ends with a question mark
saw systematic knowledge about markets as flowing from precisely formulated models.
I wonder if this mathematicization/knowledge made neoliberalism less liberal? In other words some knew cheat codes while others didn't know they existed??
cyborg sciences
funny bc I feel like I am reading the work of a robot 0_O lots of math talk when a system of economics relies on PEOPLE, people!
option theory
As in like 'optioning' a book?
a culture that differed from it in
yeah, one that values capital and generates greed rather than economic and therefore ecological sustainability
was not in economics departments; it remained primarily in business schools
reminds me of when I first heard that UCSB did not have a business major, but an econ major!
virtual ownership
so just.... ownership... reminds me of the other reading where credit cards are 'both money and non-money'
the nation's leading stockbroker,
while this may be an accurate description, why aren't "leading" custodians held in the same regard? Probably because more ppl/institutions depend on stockbrokers :/
glorious art deco skyscrape
I wonder why the buildings of these institutions are so "glorious" in architecture
Inequality has now reached levels not seen since the so-called Gilded Age of the 1890s.
Is this just bc we didn't know how to/if we should care to measure it before then?
manufactured capital, human capital
what's the difference btwn these two?
evens Paradox proposes that increases in efficiency in the use of aresource lead to an overall increase in the use of that resource, not a decreas
This is only if efficiency is valued the way we value it....
religion to sup-ply the missing moral fervor
And nowadays, ppl are abandoning religion
standards-lowering competition
??
"reduced consumption levels
I think the bigger issue is not specificity that this is what is needed, but HOW we can begin to do this. Some people want to help/be better, but do not know how or worse, are mislead in their behaviors/market support
throughput
What is meant by this word??
The just distribution of initial ownership has to be settled socially
How can we do this when the system is so tightly coupled and is projected to continue? "Settled socially" as in everyone agrees?? Goodluck.
some will not control either population or consumptio
I disagree. I think ALL have some means of control, it's just that some are explicit while others are implicit. (e.g. the concept of biopolitics and they fuel a system that favors one social group vs. another, indirectly controlling their consumption by controlling their ABILITY to consume.)
more pop-ulation control
SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT THIS MEANS WITHOUT EFFING OVER MINORITY GROUPS/THE IMPOVERISHED
Too many critical distinctions are lost in either strategy
like what?
. Forget that silly diagram-that's not the right way to look at it.
reminds me of Liuhao's decentralized system/tree without a trunk!
consequence of poverty
how can it be a consequence of poverty without ALSO being a consequence of wealth/excess?
the South becomes like the North
this ethnocentric view bothers me and I think prevents any productive discussion about the concept of development/growth... kind of like concept of "western world." If you go far enough West... you're East!
patterns of life become variables.
misleading - patterns do not vary
gettmg on
as in surviving?
Population growth and production growth must not push us beyond the sustainable environmental capacities of resource regeneration and waste absorption.
lol too late... right?!
future progress
I do not think this kind of verbiage (linking 'future' with 'progress'), helps anything
sustainable levels
the problem = how sustainable is something that's finite?
almos
I thought almost only counted in Horseshoe and throwing grenades??
