    1. This chapter goes over rhetorical situation. I learned that there are many elements that compose rhetorical situation. From the writer to audience & purpose. All can be used to grab attention.

    2. The term “rhetorical situation” refers to the circumstances that bring texts into existence.

    1. This chapter was interesting, new, & engaging for me & aided my understanding of visual rhetoric. It is an interesting form of communication that I didn't know I used.

    2. Ethos –  An ethical appeal meant to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character. Pathos –  An emotional appeal meant to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions. Logos –  An appeal to logic meant to convince an audience by use of logic or reason.

      I never knew what ethos, pathos, or logos was. Now I can analyze others writing & my own using this information.

    1. Rhetoric is understanding language, giving it meaning, & making it unique.

      Language matters, it's the basic for all human connection.

    1. This chapter gives me the basic paragraph knowledge to build a paper. The paragraphs are the meat of the paper. I liked this chapter because it will be helpful for future papers.

    2. Calling it a “key sentence” reminds us that it expresses the central idea of the paragraph

      Key sentences = topic sentence for each paragraph.

    1. I like that this chapter compared writing to driving. You have to build up to your desired speed. Don't start your paper in full force, ease into it.

    2. When you drive, you start at 0 mph and build up speed. It’s the same with writing.

    1. This chapter was a helpful summary of the last 5 in completing a well drafted paper. I have noted key takeaways about introductions, topics, and thesis statements that I will use for future papers.

    2. What makes the writing process so beneficial to writers is that it encourages alternatives to standard practices while motivating you to develop your best ideas.

      This statement is encouraging writers to be creative and take the necessary time to write a thoughtful essay.

    1. In this Chapter, I found it most helpful to draft an outline first. I like how this chapter provided many tips and ticks and question to revise and evaluate your work.

    2. An outline is a written plan that serves as a skeleton for the paragraphs you write. Later, when you draft paragraphs in the next stage of the writing process, you will add support to create “flesh” and “muscle” for your assignment.

      This is an interesting way of describing the writing process.

    1. I took many notes in this chapter that will aid my papers and speeches ability to articulate a strong thesis. Although it may be controversial, I found that writing my thesis after my paper works well for me. I still follow thesis guidelines and tools I just have more information so I can conclude a well-summarized thesis.

    2. The goal of this selection process is to develop an overarching thesis statement that captures everything the writer wishes to say.

      A thesis should be a summary of your paper in one sentence.

    1. This is why you need to take time on your writing projects—so you can get away and do something else for a while, which sometimes ignites a creative spark, or at least provides your mind a rest.

      In this chapter, I enjoyed how it gave us resources and the basic information we need to become good writers. It is particularly important that we take our time, have confidence, and trust that practice makes perfect.

    2. Soccer is a skill. Boxing is a skill. And writing is a skill. These are not merely talents or gifts. And, believe it or not, self-confidence is a skill.

      I really like this comparison. It just represent how practice is everything. When it comes to writing, I believe anyone can get good.

    1. I really liked how this reading was not only a useful tool but an enjoyable read. I really like when a textbook's first chapter centers around the student. I feel like I'm having a conversation with the book rather than being talked to or taught.

      I find that a heavy workload is personally what I find most challenging, however I have many resources to help me and prioritize my time such as a planner.
