    1. rude

      rude and rapist are not synonymous, yet thats what some 18c women make it seem like. "rapists" probably didnt exist during that time because no one viewed them that way

    2. O what a silly Fellow is a bashful young Lover!

      what do you guys think so far considering how shamela and the master have been interacting with each other up until this point?

    3. I Have heard my Mamma say, (and so you know, Madam, I have) that in her Youth, Fellows have often taken away in the Morning, what they gave over Night.

      so it is true, her mother was giving her that advice because she herself has been down that road before

    4. large Sums of Money, besides abundance of fine Things;

      some women will encourage women to continue a relationship with someone for the wrong reasons... most times these women aren't friends but sometimes the bad advice doesnt have malicious intent but instead is coming from someone who has been hurt and has a different perspective on things..

      ex. a woman who has been cheated on and ended up leaving her partner may encourage other women to overlook cheating because after she left her partner, she never fell in love again. in this case, she's encouraging women to stay with cheaters because she's thinking it's better than being alone from her own experience

    5. Oh what a prodigious Vexation it is to a Woman to be made a Fool of.

      i wouldnt consider this being "made a fool of"; i would say she was violated. this shows how lightly sexual assault was taken

    6. affectionate

      the mother still signs of saying "affectionate" even though shamela signed off saying "afflicted", indicating that she was hurt by her mother's words. i think this shows that maybe the mother isn't intentionally hurting her daughter and that what she is saying is out of love?

    7. when you yourself — but I say no more. O! What fine Times when the Kettle calls the Pot.

      in modern days we would say "the pot calling the kettle black" to identify hypocrisy

    8. the Mother had never looked into the Oven for her Daughter

      play on words - when someone is pregnant, the phrase "bun in the oven" is used. is this line saying the Mother didn't plan to get pregnant?
