    1. Consider, then, the full measure of my sadness, reading this in-scription; not merely for Hosiah Lister, but for all of us; consider the dear cost of liberty in a world so hostile, so teeming with ene-mies and opporcunjsts, that one could not become free without casting aside all causality, all choice, all will, all identity; finding freedom only in the spacious blankness of unbeing, the wide plains of nonentity, infinite and still

This shows the theme of life, and existence, because Octavian, captured by Mr. Sharpe and now bound and masked, has nothing to do but think, so he's thinking about the conditions of all those slaves out there, including Hosiah Lister, the old slave who fought and died for the Patriots. Thought about life and his life and others lives make your mind wander, and make you feel things for others whenever it's just you and an empty room.

    2. I belong," I answered in voice shrill and tight, "to the nation of whosoever-without profit-pursues the good and the right." "Then," said Mr. Sharpe, turning from me, "you are a member of an even more bedraggled and inconsequential diaspora than I had imagined." He poured his tea into his saucer and sipped it loudly. I rose from my chair and, like one distempered, began shout-ing, "This is insupportable!" "Octavian," said Mr. Gitney, with a note of warning. "T/zese crimes-" "They are not crimes," said Mr. Sharpe. "Your escape is a crime." "How?"

This isn't the most positive way to show Octavian's growth but it does show it. It's an important part to understand that this is the first time he has ever stood up to someone for the people who 'own' him technically. It's also important to note that there is so much power behind this, and strength.

    3. How might one prepare, locked in most complete immobility? I prepared only through the gathering of rage. I thought on their hypocrisy, too easy a mark, even, for argument, so howling it

This sounds like this coming of age or having a better understanding of what is going on in the world around him rather than him being there and just observing stuff. I feel like he is finally understanding what is happening around him and now noticing it, but in more depth.

    1. ognized as hers. Her visage was an assemblage of holes, the nostrils flaring with each breath. There was no kindness, no gentleness to this departure; nothing human, but rather a degeneration into some demonic substratum of the body that had waited to lay waste to all the lineaments of grace. -6

When I first read this- I had to re-read it to make sure I understood what happened. This is the plague that has gone around, but also this makes me think of cancer. How it eats away at you, and how you aren't yourself anymore... I wonder if the words were hard to read over that he had to scratch them out?

    2. efugees streamed out of Boston; we saw them on the roads, carrying everything they owned. Many had no place to go. The plague banners still hung from the windows of our house

This part makes me think of when a lot of immigrants came from Germany, Italy, Ireland, etc... On how they didn't have any options on what they could do. It was a new life, and its hard to start over, and with the plague going around it makes it that much more scary...

    3. Mr. Gitney had given me a lotion to spread over her sores. I put some upon my fingers and rubbed her face gently. She wept. Her mouth was an horrible shape; a lamentatory shape

This shows the theme of family, and the strengthen that they have for one another. I couldn't imagine watching one of my parents- let alone my mom go through this kid of pain. My little brother has atopic dermatitis, and he would get sick a lot. And he would have to go to the hospital- watching that was so hard... Especially when it's my little brother. It's so hard so the theme of caring, and loving for a family member is just so heartfelt.

    4. The child who had first contracted the pox died in the night. The pestilence had grown so thick within his throat in colonies and clusters that he could not even sip water without the most ex-cruciating pain.

I couldn't even imagine living in a time where there wasn't a cure, for almost everything. This sounds awful... The amount of detail in the wording and the amount of imagery used throughout the book- helps me as a visual learner picture what's going on. I like pictures more of course, but when a book is so detailed pictures are necessary for me then.

    1. “Losers Bracket,” family therapist Chris Crutcher introduces young readers to the heartbreaking lives of children who continue to love and depend on their parents “no matter how badly treated” they may be.

This is something that is so hard, and it just hurts my heart to even read the line about what the book is on. But again, this is something that could open up doors to counseling for younger students rather than waiting till they are in college or adults or to hopefully prevent what their parents are doing to their kids.

I feel like I do this pretty often whenever I read 'Milk and honey' because I have so many different feelings about it each time I read it.

Is this his way of showing her he respects her religion and to not worry about what happens to him...? By saying 'bless you' or is that a way for him to express to her his love for her that he wanted to give her peace of mind?

This is sweet, and I also find it interesting that he told her 'god bless you' when he isn't religious... It's just sweet to see how much he values her and loves her.

I love this- this is just so cool that she is getting to know her students and build those relationships and rapport with each student. I think that is so important because that's how you get respect from your students... It's so important to build that relationship with them and I think that's how she was and is so successful with getting her students to read.
