    1. who believe that more discipline-specific, context-specific approaches may be required to equip students to communicate and to act powerfully across diverse and complex domains.

I believe that there are overlaps in the different content areas and it would be beneficial to teach students how they should read and write differently in each class. It should be a group effort among disciplines

    2. This disciplinary emphasis on physical phenomena leads science teachers to employ many (more or less) iconic representations, or signs that bear a physical semblance to the represented object

And always relate it back to the students because it will make them care a lot more

    3. mains of science is attention to the physical universe, including the human body, planets, landscapes, at-oms, and more

It's much more interesting to study and read about something that pertains to ourselves

    4. Writing numeric and symbolic problems also requires precision, as students must attend to each mark, letter, and num-ber, as well as to their spatial placement and order, as they attempt to correctly perform specific algorithms

This is something that I've learned takes a while to understand the verbage of in mathematics and it's kind of weird to think about how we all just know what it means.

    5. Like printed texts, many multimedia texts also explicitly acknowledge the presence of their authors. Videos on YouTube, MySpace pages, blogs, and virtual worlds such as Second Life can celebrate individual authorship as people seek to distinguish their avatars, pages, videos, style, and point of view from others

I wish that these types of texts were included when I was in english classes growing up. It makes it so much more interesting and engaging for students that might struggle with the subject.

    6. written words alone may not hold the same affordances in explaining the digestive system as other combinations of modes

In science, models make it much easier to understand concepts like the digestive system

    7. uses of texts vary from discipline to discipline.

I was recently in a discussion about this how although the words that each discipline uses for annotating, reading and writing, in a sense, the ideas of what they are doing is the same throughout.

    8. even those who believe it is their responsibility may not feel adequately trained to provide it

This is how I feel about teaching reading and writing in science. It is just not something that we are taught in our methods courses.

    1. In other words, you’re not able to be much help to someone else if you’re not looking after yourself.

I've recently found this out. The more you wear yourself thin and don't take care of yourself, the less you will be able to help the ones around you. This is a hard concept to follow in these days where everyone makes it look easy to do everything.

    2. They should know that their need for validation through advocacy, kinship care, encour-agement, and attachment are not signs of weakness.

very powerful. This is not taught in schools at all, I remember growing up that these were all signs of weakness and it makes for some miserable times.

    3. Simply because the answers for tomorrow can only be found in the minds of those who will be responsible for it.

This is a great line. So many young students look to others for their purpose and what they should do for the rest of their lives and really that lies within themselves.

    4. then we must beg young people to be more empathic and ethical than any of us adults currently are

I believe empathy is the biggest thing that we can teach our students. Even if they don't remember the content when they cross the stage at graduation, if they've learned how to empathize, I'll be happy.

    1. 89% of Americans say the ability to post anonymously online enables people to be cruel to or harass one another.

Anonymity allows for harassment to happen so much easier without any consequences. I don't agree with it, and I don't know why any teen would willingly sign up to allow themselves to be bullied.

    2. 31% say stronger laws are the single-most effective way to address this issue

This is interesting. I don't think that I have ever heard to too many laws that are related to online harassment. I wonder if they exist or if people are being charged under other crimes for the online harassment. I think that if there were either more laws or if there are laws, if we made them more known then it could have the potential to decrease online harassment

    3. nearly eight-in-ten Americans (79%) say online services have a duty to step in when harassment occurs on their platforms.

I would agree that websites are partially in charge of stepping in when harassment occurs, but also someone needs to reach teens how to use social media and how to keep themselves as safe as possible online

    1. Facebook is more likely to be cited as the most used site by lower income youth than by higher income teens, while Snapchat is more likely to be a frequently used site for more well-to-do teens.

Curious as to why this is.
