Molecular studies have corroborated that these taxonomic units represent genetically distinct groups, suggesting that the structure of the river basins can impose severe restrictions to gene flow, leading to population structuring and differentiation (Hollatz et al. 2011; Gravena et al. 2014, 2015; Hrbek et al. 2014).
