Each ad gets a score, and the resulting rank determines who gets their ad shown in the top slot and who misses out on the first page of results.
Have they tested this ranking algorithm against real people's opinions? I'm curious if people's opinions would match the ranking

In the e-commerce space, let’s say you sell marathon running shoes, but not trail running shoes, you can exclude “trail” from triggering your ads.

Since both high- and low-competition keywords can be advantageous for your website, learning more about search volume can help you prioritize keywords and pick the ones that will give your website the biggest strategic advantage.
As mentioned in the paragraph, while "it may be more advantageous to target terms with lower search volume because they're far less competitive" does that mean terms with larger search volumes are not beneficial? It suggests to find a balance but sometimes it is difficult to find terms that match your content with less than 5,000 monthly searches. If the keyword I am looking to use has a huge search volume should I not use it at all? I understand that puts you in a more saturated pool and may indicate ambiguous intent. How does one make the decision on how to address this?
