I found this quote revealing because it helped me see 'good writing' from a different perspective than before. I always thought that good writing meant emphasizing your point of view in as many ways as possible, often skipping the part where you consider and negotiate with competing points of view. I have the tendency to provide evidence based on what the reading suggested - to prove I'm right, and that means that the other information which doesn't clearly support my argument is not included. Understanding the use of evidence as both proof and test is helpful to improve my writing. I chose to highlight this specific quote because simply providing evidence to prove you are right does not paint a clear enough picture for the reader. In testing your ideas, as well as providing proof of its validity, I think I am able to establish stronger and more effective assertions in my writing.

My eyes stopped at this section because it acknowledged the doubts I had as I read this chapter. Admittedly, this was my initial thought when reading Erving Goffman's theory of the self. It is easy to differentiate ourselves from the roles we play, and to say that we play roles in society seems as though we play something other than ourselves. This quote was much more compelling and accurate in that it did not continue its argument without addressing an opposing idea or a different perspective. I was able to engage with the text a lot more after reading this quote because I felt as though I was able to better follow the writer's line of thought.

    1. The meanings of words and the kinds ofsense a sentence makes are rarely stable. The transparent theory of language assumes the opposite— that wordsare more like clear windows opening to a meaning that can be separatedfrom language. It also assumes that the meanings of words are obvious andself-evident.

I chose this quote, as well as the following few sentences, because words and their meanings are all relative. Many words do, in fact, have multiple meanings which vary depending on context. Their meaning is not so fixed as to claim that it exists beyond the realm of language, but rather, the system of language is in place to assign meanings to words.

    2. We tend to assume that things meansimply or singly, but virtually all words have multiple meanings, and wordsmean differently depending on context.
