    1. rose and fell

Earlier he talks about profit and loss we can see this as a positive and a negative and later on he mentions how he has risen and fallen and it becomes a positive and a negative again.

    2. Think.

When she says "think" here is she actually telling this person to think about all the different times she has never known what they are thinking or is she just emphasizing the fact that she never knows what this person is thinking?

    1. blow

Towards the end of this piece with the word robber, aiming and blow could blow possible represent a gun shot? Or just represent "the end" metaphorically?

    2. Henry

Although the author has explained that Henry was first the hand then that Willie is the hand, we still see that the author repeats Henry's name after. I wonder why that is? Who are all these named individuals?

    1. Clipping

When I think of the word clipping I think of scissors cutting something up. It makes me think that this last sentence in the poem is trying to cut up and remove something from the years.

    1. So I will let it alone and talk about the house.

This line reminds me of what we spoke in class on Tuesday on having unasked questions. The fact that she is going to just let it go and not allow herself to ask herself the questions to help her through her situation is going to affect her negatively. As well as continue on allowing her husband to tell her whats best for her.

    1. this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others

tying it back to our previous class where we spoke about learning through watching the effect things have on the people around us.

    2. Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddenness that I was different from the others

This reminds me of our last class when speaking about Henry Adams and the term epistemology. How Du Bois knows he is different, is by the effect of this one girl refusing his card.

    3. being a problem is a strange experience

I can only imagine this being a strange experience due to the fact he does not consider himself to be a problem, although the world around him thinks other wise.

    1. he read the letter, but he never felt the law

Very sad how you don't come to care or think about something until you experience it first hand yourself, I suppose it has always been like that..

    2. Satisfied that the sequence of men led to nothing and that the sequence of their society could lead no further, while the mere sequence of time was artificial

This idea that this sequence, order of events are leading nowhere, almost makes me think of a dead end.

    3. the dynamo became a symbol of infinity

This sentence reminds me of our class session this past Tuesday, the dynamo may be a symbol of advancing forward but just keeping in mind that the things that move us forward may also destroy us.

    1. From my five arms and all my hands

I believe this is not only emphasizing his many tasks but just goes to show that his boss does not see him as a thinking human being but simply as a mechanical object that can only benefit him through labor. I believe his "five arms" are his 2 arms, legs and head. This goes to show that they do not even care about what he is thinking or feeling, he is dehumanizing himself.

    2. Out of burlap sacks, out of bearing butter, Out of black bean and wet slate bread, Out of the acids of rage, the candor of tar, Out of creosote, gasoline, drive shafts, wooden dollies, They Lion grow.

Out of all these mechanical, chemical filled things this Lion is becoming alive. It is not a real, warm blooded lion, but instead it is filled with sacks, rage, tar..etc

    3. the candor of tar

Candor means honesty and openness. For me, Levine uses tar as a way to show that the truth is being covered up. Tar is used to create roads and essentially covers up the natural ground. You can only cover something up for so long until the truth comes out.
