    1. This way ofbeing embraces the rigor of systems, the creativity of play, and the gamedesign instinct to continually redesign and reinvent meaning.

To me this quote embodies what it means to be a lifelong learner and global citizen.

    2. Play = "free movement within a more rigid structure." This speaks to me as I implemented purposeful play time in my classroom last year and until the expectations were developed and adhered to it was more chaos then play.

    3. Almost anything can be considereda system, from biological and physical systems to social and culturalsystems.

When reading this I think of all the systems our students need to navigate every day. The rules and expectations vary from school, friend cohorts, religious venues, clubs, and home. To go from one to another takes awareness and sometimes explicit teaching.

    4. A chess king, for example, is just a little figurine sitting on acoffee table. But when a game of chess starts, it suddenly acquires all kindsof very specific strategic, psychological, and even narrative meanings

This statement really made the concepts of gaming literacy meaningful to me. I love chess but prior to learning all the roles, rules, strategies, narratives (the literacies), it was simply a decoration.

    5. The emphasis inmedia literacy as it evolved during the 1980s was an ideological critique ofthe hidden codes embedded in media.

The concept of hidden codes embedded in media has always been fascinating to me. I remember taking classes on possible subliminal messaging within advertising. This may date me, but I remember looking for secret images in ice cubes or other images in ads.

    1. f we suggest change in practice, it is that teachers might expand their pedagogical repertoire and that learners might engage in a wider range of knowledge actions.

This is very powerful. If we can teach students how to be scholars in a systematic way we pave their way to acquire and use knowledge. The facts are no longer the focus, but rather how perspective and relationships of ideas are key.

    2. To imposition from above is opposed expression and cultivation of indi-viduality; to external discipline is opposed free activity; to learning from texts and teachers, learning from experience; to acquisition of isolated skills and techniques by drill,

I agree with Dewey's idea that education should be grounded in experience. However, to be able to acquire such skills, students need to be taught how to be students. Since I work with younger students I understand that social interactions need to be taught expilicitly as well.

    3. t means to be told things rather than to find them out for yourself.

There is such a lack of perspective in this type of pedagogy. Perspective is so important. An event can be looked at from many angles.

    4. Conceptualizing is not merely a matter of teacherly or textbook telling based on legacy aca-demic disciplines, but a Knowledge Process

The idea of the "Knowledge Process" is so important to me as a teacher. I have learned that the habits of a learner are more important than fact regurgitation. The process of assessment, prescription of direct instruction, then reflection of progress is key in student success.

    5. The singular part arises when literacy is presented as a single, official or standard form of language, one right way to write, and an idealized canon of authors conven-tionally considered ‘great’.

I think this statement encompasses the question on relevancy of what is taught. It creates the gap between students based on culture, socio-economic status, back-ground knowledge, and language acquisition. As educators we must be very mindful of who chooses what is "great."

    1. fosters foundational knowledge in understanding digital and multimodal texts

This piggybacks from my other comment, but I have never taken a course specific to this understanding.

    2. digitally infused pedagogy for transformative teaching and learning

I have always worked at the primary level, where instruction of digital methods was quite limited. I am very excited to explore the ability to integrate this in my instruction.
