    1. Although we usually are not aware of it, we often mimic the gestures, body posture, language, talking speed, and many other behaviors of the people we interactwith.

I can personally attest to this! Me and my best friend steal phrases from each other all the time. Occasionally we have debates on who actually started them.

    2. When he was a teenager, my son often enjoyed looking at photographs of me and my wifetaken when we were in high school. He laughed at the hairstyles, the clothing, and the kindof glasses people wore “back then

For Christmas, my grandmother made me and my mom photo albums. Basically these albums told our life stories. The three of us died laughing when my great aunt Cynthia's picture surfaced. BEEHIVE HAIR for daaaays. It was crazy and apparently it stayed that way for days on end.

    1. But aside from mastering the foreign language, the two greatest difficultiesfor the Peace Corps volunteers were concerned with social time: “the general pace of life,”followed by one of its most significant components, “how punctual most people are” (Spradley& Phillips, 1972

From my Spanish classes I have learned that the pace of life is very different in each part of the world. In America, we are go go go, don't stop until it's done. Where as in Spanish speaking countries the pace of life is much slower and if you are late for work because you were catching up with a friend that is totally okay there.

    1. One prominent example of such differencesis biting one’s tongue. In India, this signals embarrassment; however, in the U.S. this expressionhas no such meaning (Haidt & Keltner, 1999

Each culture has different social cues. There are different meanings, sometimes completely opposite meanings. These things are culture scripts.

    2. The social constructivist camp, however, claimed that despite a common evolutionaryheritage, different groups of humansevolved to adapt to their distinctiveenvironments

This term is so interesting to me. The fact that people have the ability to adapt to multiple situations and environments is very interesting.

    1. There are differences in body language, religious practices, and wedding rituals.

It is so true that we as a society do not put much thought into different cultures, unless it's about food. However, there are so many differences that are stated above. Weddings are very different through out culture. When I was nine I believe I was in my honorary cousins wedding, they are Vietnamese. I still have the traditional dress in my closet it is beautiful, blue with white designs and white pants. They had a Vietnamese ceremony and an American ceremony. Not realizing at the time, I did refer to the American ceremony as the real one and my grandma quickly corrected me. So I really paid attention to the Vietnamese ceremony and it was really beautiful.

    1. orexample, sometimes people have anegative, emotional reaction to a socialgroup (prejudice) without knowing even themost superficial reasons to dislike them(stereotypes)

This is so true certain stereotypes are engraved at such an early age, some people don't even know they are acting on them.

    1. Afterpuberty, girls are also more likely to beunhappy with their bodies than boys.

I hate this. I hate that young girls feel this way. Puberty and middle school is crappy enough let alone adding self-esteem issues along with it. Personally I believe media has a lot to do with this. I wish there were more women on magazine covers that were average. The average height for a woman is 5'4 and average jean size is a size eight. I wish that was more normal in the minds of girls. If it was I truly think depression and eating disorders would decrease.

    2. These are important distinctions, and though we will not discuss each ofthese terms in detail, it is important to recognize that sex, gender, gender identity, and sexualorientation do not always correspond with one another.

I have always been extremely openminded as far as gender and sexual orientation. However, I am very pleased to know the exact terminology and meaning. I feel like the differences and correct terminology should be more known and even talked about. I believe if there was more awareness maybe we could move towards acceptance as a community or country even.

    1. If the bystander is alone, personal responsibility to help falls solelyon the shoulders of that person.

Exactly, I believe if you are alone in a situation where someone needs help, you are more likely to help. The bystander effect has no chance to intervene. If you wish to help that person YOU must be the one to do it.

    2. You willfind video segments in which apparentlyinnocent individuals are victimized, whileonlookers typically fail to intervene.

The bystander effect could also come into play here. This effect is basically people are less likely to help if there are more people present. In an episode of Law and Order SVU a rape happened in the court yard of an apartment complex. About 10 people saw the rape happen, however, everyone assumed that someone else would call the police. Thus the police were not called. She reported the rape herself.

    1. While half of the subjects were urged by the experimenters to“remain objective and detached,” the other half were told to “try and imagine how the otherperson feels.” Though both groups received the same information about their partner, thosewho were encouraged to engage in empathy—by actively experiencing their partner’semotions—acted with greater cooperation in the economic game

The concept of empathy has always interested me, probably because I am overly empathetic at times. So I often wonder how someone could just simply not care about another person. The fact that a little encouragement makes all the difference is comforting to me.

    2. However, when the two participants view their partnershipas a joint effort (such as a friendly relationship), cooperating is the best strategy of all, sinceit provides the largest combined sum of money ($10—which they share), as opposed to partialcooperation ($8), or mutual defection ($4). In other words, although defecting represents the“best” choice from an individual perspective, it is also the worst choice to make for the groupas a whole

Several years ago on Law and Order SVU a little girl was killed. I believe it was an accident, however, one girl out of her friends felt she was responsible. There were six friends in their group and all other five confessed to the murder. I suppose figuring they could not all be charged.

    1. Children with ASDalso show reduced activity in the FG when viewing faces (e.g., Schultz et al., 2000). Slowedprocessing of faces (McPartland, Dawson, Webb, Panagiotides, & Carver, 2004) is acharacteristic of people with ASD that is shared by parents of children with ASD (Dawson,Webb, & McPartland, 2005) and infants at increased risk for developing ASD because of havinga sibling with ASD (McCleery, Akshoomoff, Dobkins, & Carver, 2009).

This confuses me a little there was a part in the text above about how siblings of ASD individuals can experience deceased biological motion. Then this is saying parents of ASD can have a slow process of faces as well. Again my little brother has Asperger's and I am able to remember peoples faces and drink order after 1 or 2 visits. I also am very empathetic and can read people decently well. So I would be very interested in the research.

    1. When surveyed,87.3% of Americans reported that theylived with other people, including familymembers, partners, and roommates(Davis & Smith, 2007).

This number in a way makes me sad for some people. I know that some people are scared to live alone, have to have a roommate to afford rent, or simply don't want to be held down with a lease. But I have lived alone for almost three years now and it is the best thing I could have done. I love it and maybe thats odd, but not having to worry about how my actions would effect someone else was so therapeutic for me. I do have four cats and no one can tell me (except my landlord lol ) I can't get a hamster or a dog. I can leave my laundry on the couch for days, it's magical.

    2. Do people work as hard as they can when they are ingroups?

NO! We have all had that one group project where one person does absolutely nothing and we have to pick up the slack. Or you will have one person that wants to do all the work and has no idea how to share tasks. I have often wondered how the person who does nothing, what goes through their head.
