      This could be a novel way of addressing mental illness... especially in psychiatric hospitals. The diet fed to the patients may need to be adjusted to promote a healthy gut microbiome as part of the therapy in combating depression.... Having worked in a psych hospital I can speak first hand about how institutional the food is.

      with exposure to more dangerous microorganisms how does this affect what we know of as the microbiome? Staph is a common bacteria that resides in healthcare workers noses from common exposure....I wonder if healthcare workers gut microflora is different then the general population

      The microbiome from the gut has been shown to be very important in newborns. As the baby passes through the birth canal-through a vaginal birth it is exposed to the mothers good bacteria and helps establish their immune system. A few studies have shown c-section babies have lower immune systems because of the possible lack of exposure to good bacteria from Mom. So, this was not a surprising statement.
