empowering the individual
Again, a focus on self-love and self-empowerment rather than usefulness to other people
In fact there was no expectation that individuals should fit this either/or pattern. Indigenous views of gender in those days were broadly visioned, not binary. Sometimes three, four, five, or more genders were recognized in a particular culture, and all were accepted as normal components of the created order.
A society that doesn't think in binaries seems so progressive yet so foreign to me at the same time. I never realized just how much European society was categorized into binaries until recently
and am in relationship, with myself.
This is so cool- I feel like European culture defines people too much based on their relationship with or usefulness to others. Focusing on a relationship with the self probably has so many benefits for mental health and self worth
gender expression and identity, not sexual orientation.
This reminds me of one of the readings from last week that defined sex as only the actual act, and separated orientation from sex entirely
There is also space here for Indigenous genderqueer, gender non-conforming, and other non-binary identified people.
It seems like the idea of a Two Spirit identity is really progressive, and allows for free expression without restrictive or binary categories
