“stochastic parrots”
I'm late to the chat at this point but I have to say this. A BIG asterisk here. There's a paper on this term that says parrots have a form or a degree of intelligence that allows them to connect feelings, context and words to string the words together. I'll try to find the link to the paper asap.
But the profound anthropomorphisms that characterize today’s “AI” discourse—conflating predictive analytics with “intelligence” and massive datasets with “knowledge” and “experience”—are primarily the result of marketing hype, technological obscurantism, and public ignorance.
This reminds me, a LOT of languages that we use daily (in and out of academia) to describe our brain and its inner workings are mechanic or computer-related. Think "my brain is wired to..." or even the figurative lightbulbs that appear when we have an idea. I've heard that science fiction narratives played a big role in the trend. Also the way we study the brain became very technical in the recent years, so that might have affected how scholars approach our minds.
