Expressivity f inds sources from play, as well as from practice, from study, f rom emotions, from intuition, from chance, and from rational imagination and transgressions. In fact, drawing, p ainting, and the use of all languages are experiences and explorations of life, of the senses, and of meanings. They are an expression of urgency, desires, reassurance, research, hypothesis, readjustments, constructions, and inventions.
To watch kids while they are exploring and playing it is clear that they are learning. How they express their learning can vary. I wonder, as adults, if it's our own lost ability to do so that hinders how to best teach children.
