    1. socially recognized

Ahh, so important! I swear there can be so many different dialects and pigeon languages separate from what I label academic or standard english. To accommodate these different languages I allow some assignments to be written or responded to in a dialect they are comfortable in while essays have to be written in academic/standard English. Also, when I pick up a word that students use that is foreign to me, we create a vocab card for it where they explain its meaning, part of speech, and how I would use it in a sentence. They really seem to enjoy it :)

    2. pieces of ex isting song s and spl icing them together

This is not completely the same...but I love it when people make school topics into songs...like the Helping Verb song! When I ask a grammar question to my class regarding the helping verb song my students regularly start reciting the Jingle Bell remix to find the correct helping verb. Its a familiar melody that helps with the unfamiliar words.

So do we have to completely reinvent the wheel instead of just tweaking what has already been created? Not an issue, just a clarification question. I rely heavily on templates and tweaking vs creating an original piece of media for my courses.
