    1. Even the Chinese philosopher was wise enough to regard the individual as the basis of the empire

      This paragraph out of context to me reads like an argument for communism, the logical "improvement" of democracy, especially the quote of the Chinese philosopher. It's only the rest of the essay that steers his ideas towards anarchy.

    2. Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice.

      It's remarkable to me that this sentence still applies how many hundreds of years later. It reminds me of how the law is oftentimes unjust, particularly in the case of the increased incarceration and conviction rates of minorities. Law doesn't reflect morality, it reflects the will of the elite.
